Artist Statement
A magnet is an object that creates magnetic fields between its 2
inseparable opposite poles North and South. Magnetic fields are
invisible forces unless bits of specific material align along their
lines. This image illustrates this complex phenomenon. It
represents a bar magnet surrounded by iron filings submitted to
the forces attracting or repelling them, thus delineating its
magnetic fields. The contrast of colors and shapes is my
personal interpretation to represent the theme Opposites Attract.
About the Artist
Fascinated by art since I was a child playing with natural clay in the French countryside, I later dedicated years to stone carving before moving to collages and printmaking. But more than art schools, books and a lifetime of visiting museums, it is the discovery of digital media that for me opened new avenues of creative explorations. Mac computers and Epson inkjet printers now make up my primary artistic medium. Using digital brushes to build images or manipulating my photos and scans, I work in numerous layers toward the final composition. Once achieved, the virtual image can be output as an archival fine art print, on paper or fabric panels, transferred on wood or other substrates or dye infused in metal. Traditional media can also be used as finishing touches. In the end virtual and real brushes mingle seamlessly. This work allows me to transcend the mundane into poetry and express my personal visions in boundless ways. I feel privileged to benefit from the infinite mathematical capacities of computers while following my (non mathematical) artistic intuition.

Learn More About Artist Susan Overstreet
Susan's bold, expressive style spans subject matter from dramatic figure and portraiture, to exuberant florals and quintessential Cape Cod architecture and landscape. Susan completed studio work at George Washington University as an undergraduate, and continued studying fine arts at the Corcoran School of Art and Art League School of Alexandria. While living in Virginia her work was accepted in many juried competitions including the Fairfax County Council of the Arts, the Fairfax Government Center, the Springfield Art Guild Annual Juried Exhibition, Waterford Art Festival, the Alexandria Art League, and the Torpedo Factory. "After the events of 9/11, my political passion was reignited and I received my MA in American Politics at George Mason University. I became a part-time professor and was awarded a teaching fellowship at Brandeis University. In 2010, after lecturing for years on the "pursuit of happiness," I decided to live my own version of the American dream and embrace art full time. I packed my bags and easel, and moved to Cape Cod where I have found a supportive community of artists. My journey has stimulated an evolution in expression and a commitment to concentrate on my individual style." - Susan Overstreet

Visit ArtsCapeCod and fill your calendar with arts & cultural events throughout the Cape!
ArtsCapeCod was designed to promote the estimated 3,000 cultural events that happen right here on Cape. We are currently promoting over 500 events, and we welcome all new events! The site has an
on-line box office capability, allowing a site visitor to book tickets to multiple venues, as well as a comprehensive calendar that has the capability of feeding information to other media outlets. ArtsCapeCod is being made possible through an Adams Grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and contributions from the Cape Cod Foundation, John K & Thirza F. Davenport Foundation and the Edward Bangs Kelly & Elza Kelley Foundation.
