AFCC Spring Talent Search for Summer Concert Series Musical Acts

Summer Concerts The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod presents a Spring Talent Search for new bands to add to the lineup of the 2013 TD Bank Summer Concert Series at Tommy Doyle's Irish Pub on May 15, 6 pm and the public is invited to attend.

The TD Bank Summer Concert Series will be held for four weeks in eight towns across Cape Cod during July. The line up for the Talent Search includes 11 Cape Cod bands: The Skiffs, Out Late with Diana DiGioia, The Fringe, The Familiars, Cla Do Bossa Nova, Technicolor Motor Home, The Rob Warren Band, Paradise Rock, Total Harmonic Convergence, 93 North, and Cape Cod Connection.

Cape Cod Maritime Days

Maritime Days The 20th Annual Cape Cod Maritime Days will be celebrated May 19 - June 21 with a wide array of maritime events and activities.

The month-long event will include a variety of Cape-wide maritime-themed activities, including guided kayak excursions, lighthouse & walking tours, nautical art exhibits, the 17th Annual Cape Cod Maritime History Symposium at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History on June 1, the Wellfleet Harborfest and Nautical Flea Market on June 1st and more. Maritime Days will culminate with the 5th Annual Cape Cod Quahog Day at the oceanfront Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis on Friday, June 21.

The Art Gallery of the Guild of Harwich Artists presents a Meet the Artist event with Mary Ann Simpson on May 11, 2 - 4 pm.

Mary Ann, a new member of the gallery, will create a painting of a colorful sky casting light on water and rocks. Titled Evening Light, Mary Ann's presentation will be in watercolor, although she paints in both watercolor and oil.

2013 ArtWorks Exhibit at Heritage Museums & Gardens

ArtWorks Heritage Museums & Gardens presents the 2013 Artworks Exhibit in the American Art & Carousel Gallery now - May 12.

The Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board, area high schools and Heritage have been collaborating on a program to help teens consider a career in the arts. The program culminates in a special exhibition of the work of these forty students and their artist mentors. The show will travel to the Cape Cod Museum of Art from May 18 - June 1, followed by Wellfleet Preservation Hall from June 8 - 22 and concluding at the Massachusetts State House from June 29 - August 18.

Also current on exhibit now - October 27: Driving Our Dreams: Imagination in Motion, exploring personal mobility in the sprawling urban environments of the future, and Paper Metropolis, an interactive, cooperative art installation representing a future cityscape.

A reception for both exhibits will be held on May 24, 5:30 - 7 pm.

Works by Milton Teichman, May 14 - June 30: Milton has experienced a double passion in his life: he spent forty-seven years teaching literature and writing on the college level and during that period he also actively pursued his interest in painting and sculpture. Related event: lecture on May 28, 11 am.

Collecting Stories: American Paintings from the Collection of Thomas Davies, May 21 - July 7: Davies has been collecting for over 25 years and has focused on collecting major New England artists, with a range of categories represented. Related events: lecture and signing, May 25, 11 am; wine and book discussion of Collecting Stories by Davies on June 18, 7 pm & June 20, 2 pm.

HyArts Artist Shanties at Hyannis Harbor Soon Opening  

HyArts The HyArts Artist Shanties at Hyannis Harbor will open on May 17, 11 am.

Browse among the seven colorful shanties featuring local artists who work and sell their wares right from their "seaside studios". Artists change weekly and work varies from painting, jewelry, sculpture, glass, ceramics, mariner knot work to wood carving and much more. Shanties are open weekends May/June, seven days a week as of June 28. Also in July & August are family nature crafts and activities on Thursday afternoons (July/August) and music on Friday evenings with Cape Harmony.

Alden Gallery presents its spring group show 14 x 11 from May 17 - June 27, with an opening reception on May 17, 7 - 9 pm.

Featuring 15 gallery artists all working in a specific and uniform size - 14 inches tall, 11 inches wide. Some of the artists focus on landscapes, some on figures; some use purely abstract forms and some are exclusively representational; some pieces are wall sculptures, some are mixed-media collages, and some are oil paintings.

Folly Cove Designs Exhibit, now - May 23: Folly Cove Designers were a thriving group of block printing artists on the North Shore in the 1940 through the 1960s composed mostly of women. Zoe Eleftherio, one of the last living designers of this group, is sharing samples of the work including her own.

Visual Artists Cooperative Exhibit, now - May 23: A group of artists working in various mediums and styles who have joined together to promote their work - and foster increased love, understanding and enthusiasm for self expression in the arts. The inclusion of a variety of media encourages experimentation and the challenge of old boundaries.

Paint and Switch at Cultural Center of Cape Cod

The Cultural Center of Cape Cod and The Prints and the Potter Gallery present Paint and Switch, a cultural exchange between Worcester and Cape Cod now - May 26.

The exhibit is of work by twelve of Worcester County's foremost artists. In return, fifteen distinguished Cape Cod artists will present new works at the Prints and the Potter Gallery in Worcester from May 19 - June 16. The principle behind the twin exhibitions is to expand the visibility of artists from both regions and to provide the viewing public with fresh images by talented artists from different parts of the state.

Schoolhouse Gallery Annual Juried Competition

In celebration of the fifteenth year of presenting photography in Provincetown, the 2013 competition is dedicated to photography. Paul Schulenburg is an internationally collected artist who calls the Outer Cape home. His work has been shown in the solo shows and many group exhibitions, he has appeared over a dozen times in respected national art publications, and is a first place prize-winning Copley artist.

Centerville Historical Museum presents Minding Your Beeswax, an exhibit by Sara David Ringler, now - July 6.

Through painting and printmaking, Sara arranges, alters and layers forms, shapes and color. Encaustic is a medium she uses to literally meld multiple images together. Through this ancient technique she finds an abundant resource for making contemporary art.

Life Forms Exhibit at Sandwich Glass Museum

Sandwich Glass Museum presents the exhibit Life Forms, by Bryan Randa, now - October 31.

Displaying a variety of creatures from the natural world, the exhibit features creatures from the garden like hummingbirds, praying mantis and dragonflies. Much of the work is aquatic life from the ocean, such as octopi, sea turtles, crabs and sea shells of all kinds. Also shown are colorful vases and sculpture, along with a few drinking vessels.

Also on exhibit is Portraits of Sandwich: Denizens of the Cape's Oldest Town now - July 21: From oil paintings to the introduction of photography, this diverse collection focuses on 19th century Sandwich.

Calliope Poetry Reading Series at West Falmouth Library

Calliope The Calliope Poetry Reading Series continues with featured poets Marjorie Black, Charles Coe, Joyce Wilson at the West Falmouth Library on May 12, 3 - 5 pm, with open mike sign up at 2:45 pm.

Marjorie Block's forthcoming collection is Where One Thing Becomes Another in which her poems are the muses for the photography of Allan Cole. Charles Coe is the author of two collections of poems, Picnic on the Moon and All Sins Forgiven (2013). Joyce Wilson's first book of poems is The Etymology of Spruce (2010). She is editor and creator of The Poetry Porch.

Writers Night Out: The Future of Children's Book Writing 

CCWC Cape Cod Writers Center will hold its next Writers Night Out with Jim Coogan at Uno's Restaurant on May 15, 5:30 pm.

Jim Coogan will talk about about why he gravitated to children's book writing and how he approaches it. He will use examples from his own books to illustrate the genre and will touch on self-publishing, as he is a successful advocate for getting into print via that route (with 45,000 books sold since 1999). Finally, he will discuss his experiences with e-books and his projections of an ever-growing market for children's e-books.

Drawing & Sketching from Nature with Eve Aspinwall at CCMNH

CCMNH Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents Drawing & Sketching from Nature with Eve Aspinwall on May 11, 10 - 11:30 am. Registration required.

Children will be introduced to basic drawing tools, media and techniques, followed by a session of sketching outdoors. If rainy, the class will be held indoors and will work from natural objects provided by the instructor or from the Museum's collection. One of the goals of this class is to learn to observe things closely and to see nature in a new way. For grades 5 - 7.

Photography Center of Cape Cod Competition Winners Announced

Sturgis Library Sturgis Library presents the Teen Artists Coalition of Cape Cod, a collaborative youth program, with its first session on May 18, noon - 3 pm. Space limited, registration required.

Learn the significance, symbolism and meaning of Tibetan Prayer Flags which have been around for more than 200 years. Participants will learn to hand dye fabric with natural dyes, write their own hopes/wishes/prayers and create their own versions of Prayer Flags while learning why these flags bring peace and harmony to the world. For ages 13+.

Birdwatching for Beginners at Cape Cod Museum of Natural History

CCMNH The Cape Cod Therapy Dogs as Derby Dogs, May 18, 1 pm: A fun-filled Cape Cod Therapy Dog program with its own version of the Kentucky Derby.

Birdwatching for Beginners, May 20, 10 am: Gretchen Moran Towers presents basic skills designed to enable bird identification through sight and sound. Following the presentation, venture outdoors to view the birds in their natural habitat and practice methods just learned. Geared toward children, but also for all interested family members.

Cape Cod Community College Jazz Combo Concert

CCCC The Cape Cod Community College Jazz Combo will perform in concert in the Tilden Art Center Main Theater on May 10, 7 pm.

The evening's theme is "Music for the Summer Mind" and will include a wide variety of styles such as jazz/rock, blues, swing, easy ballads, and Latin. Olli Soikkeli & Monica Rizzio, May 18, 7:30 pm: Widely known on the Cape for her vocal, violin, and ukulele playing in the popular acoustic folk band Tripping Lily, Monica Rizzio will show off her jazzier side. Despite his youth, Soikkeli is considered one of the best gypsy jazz guitarists in the world and has already played with stars such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Andreas �berg, Paulus Sch�fer, Antti Sarpila and Marian Petrescu.

Rite of Spring 100th Anniversary Concert at Orleans Historical Society

OHS Orleans Historical Society presents Rite of Spring, by Igor Stravinsky and performed by Kenneth and Kaeza Fearn, on May 18, 7:30 pm.

Written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company, with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky and stage designs and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. When the ballet was first performed on May 29, 1913, the avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a near-riot in the audience. Father-daughter duo Kenneth and Kaeza Fearn will perform the music on the OHS's new grand piano accompanied by a projected video of the ballet.

No Fear Painting: A Plein Air Painting Workshop with Mary Giammarino, May 11 & 12, 10 am - 2 pm:
Study the landscape by applying the fundamental concepts and techniques of plein air painting. Limited color palette and time will allow the study color, atmosphere, and composition without getting caught up in the literalness of the subject or its details.

Painting with Megan Hinton in Wellfleet, June 10 - 12, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm: The course introduces approaches of abstraction and representation, how they are different, and how they can be used together. This workshop allows for independent work time but also be involved with group discussion, class exercises, and demonstrations by the instructor. All levels welcome.

Working in the tradition of the Cape School of Art, John Clayton's workshop is designed for all levels of ability. Instruction will focus on developing techniques to examine the visual components of landscape painting, including basic color relationships, patterns, and the understanding of light and shade. Lessons will be informed by the elegantly simple painting approach of capturing light and color on canvas developed by the artist Henry Hensche.

The Seventh International Encaustic Conference

Encaustic Conference The Seventh International Encaustic Conference will take place at the Provincetown Inn from May 31 - June 2.

The conference, founded and directed by Joanne Mattera - now in conjunction with Truro Center for the Arts - offers professional painters, sculptors and printmakers three days of lectures, demonstrations, panel discussions and book signings, as well as numerous opportunities to network and exhibit. DACC 6th Annual Juried Photo Contest

DACC Dennis Arts & Cultural Council presents its 6th Annual Juried Photo Contest. Entries should be delivered to Dennis Town Hall from May 13 - 17.

Photos must be uniquely identifiable as Dennis and taken after January 1, 2011. Limit of three entries. Photos will be judged on composition, general appeal and technical merit. All entries will be displayed at the Dennis Public Library from May 18 - 31, with an awards reception on May 29.

Songfest 2013 Songwriting Competition

SongFest Eventide Arts presents The 15th Annual Nancy Smith Waag Songwriting Competition. Submission deadline is May 17 and finalists will be notified by May 25. The showcase concert and winners announcement will be held on June 9 on the Gertrude Lawrence Stage.

Call for Cape Cod Maritime Days Event Submissions

Cape Cod Maritime Days The Cape Cod Chamber, Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Commission invite all to participate in the 19th Annual Cape Cod Maritime Days from May 19 - June 21.

Last year, over 65 events were held throughout Maritime Days, and the hope is to offer a roster of activities that is just as exciting and diversified this year. The events will be promoted online on the Chamber's travel websites, in spring marketing, and in flyers distributed at Visitor Centers and around Cape Cod.

Village festivals, maritime presentations, lighthouse & walking tours, boat-building demonstrations, maritime art exhibits or other activities related to current or past aspects of maritime life on Cape Cod are welcome. The Creative Arts Center welcomes all two and three-dimensional artists residing in Barnstable County to enter up to two pieces of art into the 18th Annual All Cape Cod Art Exhibition. Entry day for this competition is on May 28, 9 am - 2 pm.

Participants will vie for entry into the competition and for prizes in Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Pastel, Three-Dimensional and Photography/Printmaking categories. William Davis, named as one of the Top 400 most influential, famous and intriguing people on Cape Cod by Cape Cod Life Collector's Edition, will be the juror of selection and awards. The exhibit will run June 2 - 28. Winners announced at the opening reception on June 2, 4 - 5:30 pm.

POG The Post Office Gallery is accepting open submissions for its themed art exhibit Windows, which will begin with an opening reception on June 23. Submissions deadline is May 30.

Larkin Gallery Larkin Gallery is holding an open call for submissions for its White Line Invitational, which will exhibit July 19 - 25. Submissions deadline is June 26.

All artists creating white line woodblock prints, otherwise known as the Provincetown Prints, are invited to participate in Larkin Gallery Inc.'s open call for submissions. Up to three pieces may be submitted, with one selected as priority. Two others may be selected, but will be juried due to space limitations. All work must be wired and ready to hang. Call to Artists for Studio Brush Artist Cooperative

Studio Brush Studio Brush Artist Cooperative, a new venture of the Studio Brush Gallery, is seeking established artists to form a core group of in-house artists who commit to a three to five month period.

In-House artists will pay a seasonal rate, work at the gallery, and will not be charged a commission the first year. Artists will be provided space to display and sell work, and access to a fully functional kitchen for openings and events. Artists are encouraged to set up their workspace or easels in the outside patio area in good weather, talk with customers, and promote their work. Co-op members will have access to the gallery's database of clients. In addition, members interested in teaching classes or workshops will be provided additional space to do so.

  • The Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod is hosting the exhibit Painting New England in Pastel! and submissions are open to open to all pastel artists on Cape Cod and in New England. Conducting a Life in Music Talk at Sturgis Library

Sturgis Library Sturgis Library presents Conducting a Life in Music, a talk by Yarmouth Port resident and M.I.T. faculty member Fred Harris, on May 21, 6:30 pm. Registration is appreciated.

Fred Harris will discuss his work as a conductor, focusing on his own research and on how conductors develop their craft. Dr. Harris is music director of the M.I.T. Wind Ensemble and the M.I.T. Festival Jazz Ensemble and previously taught music in the Belmont Public School system. He has authored two books on music, Conducting with Feeling and Seeking the Infinite: The Musical Life of Stanislaw Skrowaczewski.
