2021 Fire Congress
Life with Fire: Prescriptions for Resilience
Special session and workshop proposals are due next week on June 15. We know there is still uncertainty with travel, and we are committed to working with you to create a successful session whether you can be there in-person or attend virtually. The call for oral and poster presentations, fire circles, and attached meetings is also open with deadlines coming up in August.

We are happy to announce that a special collection of articles from the congress will be published in AFE’s peer-reviewed journal, Fire Ecology. All presenters can submit a manuscript for consideration, and you can indicate your interest in this opportunity on the proposal submission form.

This Fire Congress will offer a unique opportunity to not only reach those attending in Florida, but also our online audience throughout the world! Exhibitors can participate virtually if not able to attend. We offer several sponsorship levels to meet your needs, including in-kind contributions or sponsorship of certain events or activities (e.g., breaks, entertainment, field trips, scholarships).

Wondering when registration will open, or how the hybrid event will work? We have answers!
TREE grants are designed to help graduate students in the U.S. present at conferences, symposia, workshops, or other events related to wildland fire science and management. With virtual events continuing and in-person events starting again, now is the perfect time to take advantage of these professional development opportunities and share your research with others.

Funding is available to help students attend in-person or virtually at the following types of events:
  • Conferences, Workshops, and Symposia: In-person or virtual events that include content related to wildland fire science and management
  • Field Tours: Field trips or tours at research locations, burn sites, etc. 
  • Trainings: In-person or online trainings that build skills in wildland fire science and management, science communications, or leadership
  • Meetings: In-person meetings with small groups to share and discuss research

Grants typically range from $250 to $700 and are paid as reimbursements for submitted receipts. Click here for more info and to apply.

It's Time for Awards!
Recognizing and celebrating leadership, achievements, and excellence is an important part of moving the field of fire ecology and management forward. Please consider who you can nominate, and help spread the word to others to submit a nomination this year.

We are currently developing a mid-career award as well—more info on this very soon!
Certification Applications Being Accepted for 2021
AFE has several pathways for being professionally certified in wildland fire and fuels management and science. Becoming certified acknowledges your education, experience, and accomplishments and offers employers a way to identify you as a recognized wildland fire or fuels professional. 

You asked—we listened! Last year we updated our professional certification program to allow some NWCG trainings to count toward education requirements, and we are currently working on a plan for continuing education activities to count toward the required coursework for two core subject areas: 1) fire ecology and 2) fire science and management. Look for the substitution criteria on the AFE website soon! 
 
AFE suggests that you become re-certified at least every five years to provide employers, collaborators, and evaluators with valuable information on the time relevance of your certification. The application is a simple letter detailing continued education, coursework, and professional improvement since your last certification.
 
AFE also certifies academic programs at universities and colleges. With the many wildland fire programs to choose from, certified programs can attract more students into their programs. Students who graduate from an AFE Certified Program will qualify for an expedited application process to become Certified Wildland Fire Professionals. 
AFE Jobs Board
Positions are regularly posted on the AFE Jobs Board for employment opportunities in fire ecology and management.
