American Fork High School
Principal's Message

Just For You
The Wisest Course
Let me embrace thee, sour adversity, for wise men say it is the wisest course.
~ William Shakespeare
When we work hard for something and it doesn't work out, it can leave a sour taste in our mouths. If we allow it, we can become bitter and make things worse. But when we embrace adversity and persevere, we succeed in another way. We learn lessons through the process that may allow us to succeed the next time. Unfortunately, most of us — particularly those younger with less experience — want our lessons delivered neatly with a winning trophy. We don't embrace difficulties as a learning experience. Don't let adversity conclude your course, instead, embrace the lesson it offers not just to you, but those who take their cues from you.
With something to think about . . .

Sincerely,
Daniel P. Weishar
Principal

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy

The Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy is a  FREE  camp that is intended to help build America's youth into vested and productive citizens. This is not overtly a recruiting effort; however, it is hard to keep our passion for the Marine Corps out of our leadership classes and our ethics training. This is a challenging academy that tries to raise your awareness of what it takes to be a leader. We hold certain moral, physical, and intellectual values dear to us and our primary mission with this camp is to share our leadership and character traits through ethical and motivating training. Whether you intend to pursue a military career or not, I challenge you to apply and push yourself out of your box and meet diverse students from all over the world who share the same desire to be better.

Athletic
Softball - Open Gyms will resume on Tuesday, January 9 at 5:00pm in the East gym and will run every Tuesday and Thursday through February 22.  Tryouts will be February 26.

The Wrestling Team traveled to Reno, Nevada over Christmas Break. They competed in the Sierra Nevada Classic . There were 83 teams from California, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and 2 from Utah. The team wrestled very well and placed 6th as a team (they placed 24th last year, so a big improvement). 5 wrestlers finished in the top 8. Junior Rhett Miner led the pack with a 2nd place finish. Senior Ian Filoso placed 3rd, Senior Josh Bartholomew placed 4th, Senior Connor Sandstrom placed 6th, and Freshman Nathan Bartholomew placed 8th. It was a great trip and we are very excited about the top 6 finish.

The Caveman Wrestling Team hosted the Caveman Classic Varsity Duals and JV Classic Tournament. The JV team lead all other JV teams and brought home the JV tournament trophy. The Varsity did the following over the two day event:
AF over Taylorsville 54 - 16
AF over Riverton 51 - 23
AF over Alta 45 - 34
AF over MT. View 42 - 34
AF over Woods Cross 42 - 33
AF over Desert Hills 40 - 30
AF tied Orem 39 - 39 (we lose on criteria)
AF over Lehi 72 - 6
AF over Spanish Fork 52 - 30

So there was a 3 way tie for the 1st place team trophy. Desert Hill took 3rd, American Fork took 2nd, and Orem was this year's team Champions. Great Job Cavemen
