American Fork High School
Principal's Message

Just For You
New Paths
We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
~ Walt Disney

Have you heard the saying, "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got?" The origins aren't quite known, but the meaning sure is clear. If something isn't really working out, perhaps it's time to think of a new strategy. Change can be hard and scary. It can be uncomfortable, but sometimes it's just the exact thing we need to connect all the dots between teaching and learning with ourselves and our children. So, move forward embracing new ways and new people in your life. You may just benefit from the new paths that unfold.
With something to think about . . .

Sincerely,
Daniel P. Weishar
Principal

Mark you calendars and bring your families for this fun and charitable event!
COUNSELING CORNER

Be the Change will be November 7 and November 8. We invite any AF students who have never experienced Be the Change to join us! We're also looking for adult volunteers to participate in the full day event and act as a "group leader" and supporter for these students.
Be the Change is a full day event (students are excused from classes that day) that allows students to break free, break through social barriers, connect with others, dance and play, and feel validated as humans. It is often a life-changing experience and something that will never be forgotten.
Permission slips must be turned in to Counseling Office or Room 104 or Room 208 by Friday, November 2. For questions, contact Julie Bailey, Kara Allen, or Bree Toone. Contact info is provided on permission slip.

Career and Technical Education

In Computer Science students are working on a number of projects. We recently purchased an Oculus Rift for the classroom, and students have been having a great time developing virtual reality applications. Our class is working with 4th Wall FX, a local 3D design/virtual reality company, to help them develop a VR simulation of what Jerusalem was like 2,000 years ago.

AFHS just took a group of girls to the Women in Tech awards at the Grand America in Salt Lake. The students had a great time and were inspired to see so many great women in our Utah technology industry. We sat at tables with leaders from two local companies - Brainstorm and IM Flash, and the girls learned a lot about scholarship opportunities, internships, and what it's like to work at a tech company.
Here's a picture of the girls at the Women in Tech Awards:
American Fork's Emergency Medical Response classes passed off their CPR/AED skills this week. Platoon B from American Fork Fire Rescue came and helped with the certifications and also brought their brand new engine 51. Students were able to go inside the engine and were introduced to the different roles the firefighters each have. A big thank your to American Fork Fire Rescue-Platoon B and congratulations to the students who passed off their CPR/AED skills, the first step to their EMR Certification.
Floriculture- Using hands on learning
Mrs. Cami Smith’s Floriculture students have awesome class projects and include hands on learning. Pictured here, Brookelyn Livingston and Amber Gifford are working on a beautiful project. As shown, students are making paper flower bouquets called Tussie Mussies. As part of their Floral History Unit, they learned the uses of these small hand held arrangements as relief from the often unsanitary surroundings in Medieval Times. People also thought the scent of flowers would rid the air of disease and illnesses. The Tussy Mussy also became a popular fashion accessory during Queen Victoria’s reign.
Floriculture is part of the “Plant Science Career Pathway." All AFHS CTE classes are a great way to develop talents and create a great bridge from education to career and college. Have you chosen a Career Pathway to complete in high school? Connect your awesome CTE classes to a pathway today! Talk to your counselor or contact your CTE Specialist in Rm 55 or by email at alexawebb@alpinedistrict.org to learn more about AFHS Career Pathways.
The Department of Workforce Services is sponsoring an Apprenticeship Job Fair on November 15th to help celebrate National Apprenticeship Week. This is a great opportunity for our CTE students to explore opportunities.
