ADMINISTRATOR'S MESSAGE

Hello Cavemen,

This week I traveled to Alabama to present at a National Conference. As I flew out of Salt Lake City early in the morning, I had a spectacular view of American Fork and Mount Timpanogos. Looking directly below me at 35,000 feet, I could see the valley was still dark. However, from an elevated viewpoint, I could see beyond the mountain and the bright orange sun shining through the clouds.

I recently learned of a term called “glimmers.” Just like the glimmer of a new dawn, “glimmers” are the moments that spark joy and hope and make us feel safe. As we look for “glimmers” in our daily lives we feel more connected to the people and things that matter the most.

Recently, the Wellness Room at AFHS has added a service station. Often times when we just feel a little off, serving others is helpful to provide a little “glimmer” into our lives. We hope that this will be one way that you find a “glimmer” in your week.  We also hope you continuously look to provide a “glimmer” to others. We each have the opportunity to make someone’s day shine a little bit brighter with simple and kind acts of genuine friendship and care.

Being a Caveman is a “glimmer” in my life! Thank you for shining so brightly! We know you are working hard and we appreciate you!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mrs. Talonia

Assistant Principal

CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

INTERIOR DESIGN:

Mrs. Beck's Interior Design students applied the elements and principles of design and created tiny rooms! Their creativity showed through with their fun designs of bedrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, etc. These are in the library on display.

HOSA: Future Health Professionals, a student organization dedicated to students interested in careers in the healthcare field, held our bi-annual ARUP blood drive a few weeks ago. Our goal was to collect 50 units of blood. The students recruited over 150 students to donate, 107 of which showed up to donate and they were able to collect 81 units of blood. One unit of blood can help save up to 6 lives. The blood collected provides life-saving blood to Primary Children's, Shriner's, Huntsman Cancer, and University of Utah hospitals. Our next blood drive will be held on April 19 from 8 am - 2 pm, so put it in your calendar and watch for a QR Code to sign up as the date gets closer.

Also, HOSA's National Service Project this year is Be The Change, a national bone marrow registry. Watch for upcoming events where you can sign up to be in the registry and for our Be The Match table at April's blood drive.

AGRICULTURE MECHANICS:

Agriculture Mechanics students at work in the AFHS shop today. Students are learning welding techniques and will use them to build awesome projects! Careers in Welding and Fabrication are high wage and high demand!. Students can complete a Career Pathway in Ag Mechanics Systems while in high school. Contact alexawebb@alpinedistrict.org for more info on CTE Career Pathways.

NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION:

AFHS FFA had an opportunity to attend the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana where they competed in the National Poultry Evaluation competition. This team of 4 boys put in a lot of time and hard work to get there and were awarded a silver ranking for their efforts! Congratulations to them! Jill Garrett a recently graduated student from AFHS also was able to attend and receive her American FFA Degree. This is one of the highest awards you can receive within the FFA. Less than 1% of students who participate in FFA are able to achieve this prestigious award. Congratulations to all involved!

TEEN ENTREPRENEURS:

Students in the AFHS Entrepreneur classes all start their own businesses during the class. They will be joining 200 students from across Utah for the 2023 UFirst Teen Entrepreneur Expo. The expo is a chance to invite the public to shop from the state's teen entrepreneurs from 4-7 pm on December 6th.

MARKETING:

Mark Bills with Fomba Nation, specializing in high end vehicle customization, visited with the marketing and retail classes as they learned about his business. The classes have started to design a line of custom products for students and their vehicles at AFHS. We have the most supportive local community of entrepreneurs and business owners in American Fork.

MARCHING BAND STATE CHAMPIONS:

Congratulations to our Marching Band Students and Staff on their victory as State Champions. That makes 20 years straight of winning the UMEA Red Rocks State Marching Band Competition. It was started in 2003. They won by 5 points which is a very sizable victory for a marching band.

The Marching Band competed at the Bands of America Utah Regional where they competed against bands from Utah, Idaho, Nevada, California, Colorado, and South Carolina. The band came home with the gold and received the highest score at any BOA event in AF history with a score of 92.1. This places the AFHS Marching Band 9th in the country currently for scores in the Bands of America ranks which is the highest AFHS has ever placed. It was truly an outstanding achievement. Watch their performance HERE.

FOOTBALL:

Even though the season ended with a disappointing loss, it was a great year for the Cavemen Football Team! With only 2 losses the whole season, and advancing to the state semi-final game at Rice Eccles Stadium, our football team fought hard and played well all season. Thanks to the amazing coaches and players for their dedication and hard work. You made us PROUD!
