ADMINISTRATOR'S MESSAGE

Hello Cavemen,

Belief in oneself is a powerful force that can shape the course of one's life. China's most famous philosopher said, "Those who say they can and those who say they can't are both usually right." This profound statement highlights the importance of our mindset and self-perception. When we believe in our abilities and set our sights on achieving our goals, we often find the motivation and determination needed to overcome challenges and succeed. On the other hand, if we doubt ourselves and think we can't, we may inadvertently create barriers that impede our progress. So, embrace a positive mindset, believe in your capabilities, and watch as your potential unfolds, leading you towards a brighter and more fulfilling future.

PROUD to be a Caveman!

Assistant Principal

PowderPuff 2023:

The Sports Marketing class wanted to design a powder puff football tournament as a class project as a way to learn and practice the curriculum. They worked together with administration and student council to find a date and a plan. The date that worked best was the final week of October during lunches. QR codes and posters went up around the school to find the girls who would be interested in playing in the tournament. 16 Teams were formed consisting of 7-14 players each. During the early planning stages the class wanted to align the project with breast cancer awareness since October is the official month for that. After they had chosen to align with awareness we found out that faculty member Eric Spencer's wife Mindy had just gotten diagnosed with breast cancer. The Spencers were asked if they, Mindy specifically, would be ok to have their story made public. They agreed and decided to raise some money throughout the tournament to let the Spencers know that we care about them and wish Mindy strength and health. Many classes, teachers, departments, and the community offered to help and donate items. The retail class ran a pop-up shop with the donated items at the varsity playoff game held here on Campus. The football team was amazing throughout the tournament acting as refs and coaches. Team 5, calling themselves Team Steezy, took the championship and over two thousand dollars was raised for the Spencer family. It was a wonderful moment where learning aligned with the community and making a difference. Please keep Mindy in your thoughts and prayers.

HOSA: Future Health Professionals, a student organization dedicated to students interested in careers in the healthcare field, held our Bi-Annual ARUP blood drive a few weeks ago. Our goal was to collect 50 units of blood. The students recruited over 150 students to donate, 107 of which showed up to donate and they were able to collect 81 units of blood. One unit of blood can help save up to 6 lives. The blood collected provides life-saving blood to Primary Children's, Shriner's, Huntsman Cancer, and University of Utah hospitals. Our next blood drive will be held on April 19 from 8 am - 2 pm, so put it in your calendar and watch for a QR Code to sign up as the date gets closer.

Also, HOSA's National Service Project this year is Be The Change, a national bone marrow registry. Watch for upcoming events where you can sign up to be in the registry and for our Be The Match table at April's blood drive.

Judson Parker - AFHS Presidential Scholar 23-24:

Judson Parker was named U.S. Presidential Scholar in CTE for 2023-24 at

American Fork High School.  He is a Health Science Pathway Completer (3.0 credits) and has a 4.0 and 32 ACT score.  He also has multiple courses in Broadcasting & Digital Media.  His transcript also boasts Concurrent Enrollment, Honors and AP Courses.

Judson has been a member of HOSA- Future Health Professionals for three years and is currently the President.  He competed and placed 2nd in the National Geographic Anatomy & Physiology event at the state leadership conference in 2023.  Judson hopes to complete a Health Science Internship next semester as a capstone experience for his Career Pathway.

Every year American Fork HOSA conducts a blood drive in collaboration with ARUP Blood Services in the fall and the spring. Judson has served by recruiting potential donors, helping to set up the drive, and managing the snack table and the sign in desk at the drive. He also donates blood himself at these events.  He also helped organize an annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit his community.  Judson is driven by serving others and understands that this is why he would excel in the Health Science / Health Care field.

Judson is an accomplished leader in HOSA, the American Fork Marching Band, among his peers, in his family, and his community.  A great leader is someone who is willing and ready to serve those he leads; such is Judson's philosophy as a leader in high school and beyond.

Congratulations Judson!

FFA TURKEY SHOW AND SALE:

Our amazing FFA students here at AFHS have been raising turkeys this year for

Thanksgiving! To give you a little background, the kids received their turkey poults back at the end of July and have been feeding and taking care of them since. They will be competing in the Utah Junior Turkey Show next week and will have the turkeys processed the weekend before Thanksgiving. The turkeys are all processed and bagged in a USDA-inspected facility. They will be delivered as fresh, never frozen turkeys. They are completely safe and to be honest they are better than any frozen birds you are going to get at the store. The cost of the turkeys will be $4.00/lb. The turkeys will range in size from about 14 lbs to 30 lbs+. You will be able to request what size you would like and the students will try to accommodate you the best they can. Turkeys will be ready to deliver on Monday, November 20. We try to make sure they are processed within a week of Thanksgiving so that we can keep them as fresh birds and never frozen. If you are interested in buying a turkey from one of our students please email Danny Blackhurst at [email protected]

Happy Thanksgiving!

We are wishing these students good luck as they compete in the Poultry Evaluation Competition at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN.

Teen Titan Shatters World Records:

On October 18, at the International Powerlifting League World Championships held in Coventry, England, AFHS student Drake Slattery deadlifted a whopping 440 lbs., not only securing a new World Record in the junior division (15-19 years old) in the 60-kilogram weight class but also smashing records in the open division (All Ages) in the same weight category. Competing against men aged 18 and older, Drake Slattery, AFHS junior, gave a remarkable display of strength and determination.

Earlier this summer, Slattery made headlines when he set a new Deadlift World Record by hoisting a jaw-dropping 429 lbs. at the United States Powerlifting Nationals in Las Vegas on July 10, 2023. Check out the feature on him at ABC 4.

However, Drake's journey to success was far from a smooth ride. He knows that achieving your dreams means putting in the hard work. For three hours a day, six days a week, he tirelessly trained for the world competition while studying for the PSAT and term finals. Slattery even battled the dreaded jetlag when he arrived in England, proving that he's not just a powerhouse in the gym but a true fighter when it comes to overcoming obstacles.

So, what's next for Drake? Slattery’s goals don't stop at powerlifting. He says, "I need to study for the ACT and finish my Eagle Scout project." Discipline and dedication are key to get it all done. To view Drake's competition videos, follow him on Instagram @deadliftdrake.
