Principal's Message

Just For You
Naturally
Happiness and personal fulfillment are the natural consequences of doing the right thing.
~ Epictetus
Most of us as parents have experienced a time when our conscience is bothering us. Sleep might elude us as we replay the situation in our minds. Clear thinking might be difficult as we mull over what we did wrong: the unkind words we used or the dishonest response we gave. On the flip side, when we do what is good and right — when we listen to that still, small voice within — we reap the natural consequences of happiness and a sense of personal contentment. Good and right behaviors are often learned behaviors and our children watch us and our actions. As parents, we can teach them by modeling how a caring and ethical person behaves.
With something to think about . . .

Sincerely,
Daniel P. Weishar
Principal
TONIGHT IS.... "DECK THE HALLS"

We will be singing Christmas carols door to door on December 5, 6, 11, and 12 to collect money from our community and get them involved.

CTE Scholarship Application
We are happy to announce that the 2018-2019 CTE Scholarship Application is now live on the CTE website. This year the application is all online. This means no more mailing in applications. CTE Scholarships and Tuition Awards are open to any graduating senior student who plans to get CTE training after high school in one of the career clusters.
Candidates must be:
· a legal United State resident,
· a Utah resident,
· have senior status, and
· have graduated from a Utah-sponsored, public, secondary school before September 15, 2019.
Some things to think about as you help students fill out the scholarship application:
· Please read all the directions prior to filling out the application. This will help to eliminate some of the questions students might have regarding documentation, due dates, requirements, etc.
· Make sure students download the application from the website and save it to their computer. If you are using a Mac, Adobe PDF files, by default, open in Mac Preview. Have students download the application, save it to their computer, and then open the application in Adobe Acrobat Reader. If students fill it out via a web browser, no information will be saved.
· Students will need to print Page 7 of the application (signature page) and get appropriate signatures. They will need to scan and attach the signed signature page to the application.
· There may be a size limit to attached documents, depending on the email provider. Please keep that in mind as students are attaching required documentation.
· All applications are due electronically by Friday, February 1, 2019 at 5:00 PM/MST.

Again, this is the first year we are doing the application process all online. There may be issues that arise. Please contact Ashley Higgs at [email protected] if you have an issues regarding the application process. More information about the 2018-2019 CTE Scholarships can be found at https://www.schools.utah.gov/cte/resources/scholarshipsawards .

CenturyLink STEM Excellence Award - Jason Roberts
The Utah Jazz and CenturyLink have partnered with the STEM Action Center to recognize outstanding students that have demonstrated a commitment and passion for excellence in STEM. Every month during the NBA season, Utah students grades K-12 can be nominated for the CenturyLink STEM Excellence Award. CenturyLink will honor one student that demonstrates exemplary performance in areas of science, technology, engineering and math through academic excellence, teamwork, involvement in school and/or extracurricular STEM-related activities, and continued commitment to advancing STEM. Jason Roberts a 12th grader here at American Fork High School attended the Jazz game on November 21 and received the CenturyLink STEM Excellence Award! Congratulations Jason!
Teaching as a Profession
Teaching as a Profession 1 is the first in a series of 3 classes, each class is a part of a career pathway that prepares students to be educators. Students in Ms. Fish's Teaching as a Profession 1 class have explored the profession in part this semester through short lessons and demonstrations to their peers in an area of interest. Students are also given other hands-on experiences as they observe in the classroom, learn from guest speakers, and prepare and give short lessons outside of class. Students have said the following of their experience: 1. "We get to experience teaching, not just learning how to teach. We have learned how to be a good teacher and have learned for ourselves what makes a good teacher" 2. "Anyone can benefit from this class. You get to teach people about what you love, and learn from your peers. It is a really unique experience" 3. "I like the world of learning. There is so much I learn in this class and it makes me appreciate the knowledge I have (and the knowledge I have yet to learn)". Have a child that is interested in becoming an educator? Encourage them to take Teaching as a Profession 1!

At this time the top 15 candidates in every category will move on. Semi-Final judging continues on Tuesday, February 19 with an interview that combines their original electronic portfolio score with the results of the interview. After interviews, the top four finalists will be selected from each category and will participate in one more interview for the Finals (state-level) on Thursday, February 28. State winners will be announced in a live ceremony on Friday, March 15. Swim - The 2018 Bingham Invitational is in the books and our AF Girls finished with an impressive victory this year!   Our boys, few in number with several swimmers missing, placed 7 th overall.  The two-day meet last weekend held in Kearns was a great measure of training progress, & while an exciting victory on the Girl’s side…we feel there’s always room for growth & continued improvement in technique & speed & we won’t be letting up any time soon. Meets on the road to February are sometimes misleading in the sport of Swimming—& as coaches stress the team maintain their sights on the process & our season-end goals as a team.
The AFHS swim team had 53 “Top 16” finishes in the meet, with 30 being “Top 8” in the meet!  That’s an impressive feat & speaks volumes for the teamwork demonstrated by ALL of our swimmers! It was the second to final event, however, the Girl’s 400 Free Relay, that proved to be the overall most dramatic victory of the meet when AF Girl’s A & B Relay teams took 1 st & 2 nd place!!
Top 8 Finishers include---200 Medley Relay (Allie Hill, Bree Gilmour, Sara Edwards, Madi Mendenhall), 200 Free---Allie Hill, Amelia Edwards, Dylan Stauffer. 200 IM---Sara Edwards, Pete Backman, Paxton Child. 50 Free---Annalyn Dean, Talia Thomas, Livvie Adamson. 100 Fly---Sara Edwards, Madi Mendenhall. 100 Free---Talia Thomas, Annalyn Dean, Michelle Okelberry, Paxton Child. 500 Free---Allie Hill, Amelia Edwards, Kate Pasquini, Scott Buker, Mitchel Armstrong. 200 Free Relay---(Madi Mendenhall, Talia Thomas, Amelia Edwards, Annalyn Dean) (Kate Pasquini, CeCe Hooley, Sharon Blakeley, Livvie Adamson) (Mitchel Armstrong, Jordan Winder, Spencer Nielson, Caleb Wynn). 100 Back---Livvie Adamson, Michelle Okelberry. 100 Breast---Bree Gilmour. 400 Free Relay---(Annalyn Dean, Amelia Edwards, Sara Edwards, Allie Hill) (Kate Pasquini, Michelle Okelberry, Livvie Adamson, Talia Thomas) (Dylan Stauffer, Mitchel Armstrong, Paxton Child, Scott Buker).
Now that we’re staring at winter straight on, it’s a matter of staying healthy (wearing proper clothing over our suits—ahem!), continuing a laser focus in the pool & in our supplemental training, & maintaining a positive, confident mindset. Come check out our next HOME dual meet challenge on Wed. 11/28 at 3:30 pm vs WL, BHS & then we travel to the Park City Invitational on Sat. 12/1.  WAY TO GO CAVEMEN SWIMMERS!
Our own AFHS Cavette Drill team member Brinlee Lott won 1st runner up to Miss Drill Team Utah. She is the head captain of our Drill team and is such a hard worker and always a great and positive example to our team. It was a stiff competition and she represented AFHS with pride! We are so proud of her!
Portia Card and Sierra Savage
Portia and Sierra signed letters of intent with Division I schools on Nov. 15th. Portia Card will be playing LaCrosse for Fresno State and Sierra Savage will be playing LaCrosse for Central Michigan.
