Greetings!
Heading to AFN
We are in Anchorage this week for the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention. Please let us know if you are in town; we are happy to meet in person. Ki Jung Lee and Kirsten Henning will be attending in person.
Public notice for remote weather monitoring station
The University of Alaska Land team intends to issue a land use permit authorizing the State of Alaska, Division of Geological & Geophysical Survey (DGGS) to install and operate a remote weather monitoring station near 19-mile of the Haines Highway. The station consists of a 6-10 foot tall tower, and the site will encompass less than 50 square feet. The data collected from the research station would be available to the public and shared with the National Weather Service to monitor local conditions for avalanche and landslide hazards. Please click here to review the public notice, and if you wish, please comment by November 15, 2025.
Update on the Land Grant initiative
The State of Alaska recently issued a decision to relinquish the proposed land selection along the Chilkat River on the Canadian border to the University. The next step is to submit this selection to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. It is a multi-year process and we do not know if or when BLM would allow for conveyance.
Please visit our website for more information on the Land Grant Initiative, and click on the "Southeast" section to view maps of potential selections in the Chilkat Valley. Of course, if you still have questions, please contact us anytime.
If the University does receive conveyance of this new landholding, then we will continue to communicate with all of you, and find ways to address community needs while generating revenue for the UA Scholars program. The UA Land team does not have any development plans for the parcel at this time.
