On June 26, AFP Global President Mike Geiger restated and expanded on an apology he gave from the stage at the International Conference in April. That apology addressed harm done to Black fundraisers, specifically individuals connected to the Toronto chapter. The AFP global board voted unanimously to rescind Toronto’s status as a Ten Star chapter and IDEA Champions, and a National Philanthropy Day honoree at the center of these issues has rescinded their award in response to multiple years of concerns raised by those affected by the Toronto chapter’s leadership.
Prior to Global’s recent action, your Fort Worth Metro chapter board had also discussed these issues and what they mean to us in North Texas.
This AFP chapter should be a resource and haven for anyone facing discrimination and hate in the course of their professional and volunteer work. While our organization and our sector have room to grow, our IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access) committee is helping us grow with intentionality. If you are aware of issues within our chapter that are holding us back from realizing ideals of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, these volunteer leaders, and your entire board of directors, want to help us all move forward towards ending harm, starting healing, and ensuring belonging.
You can play a role in helping our chapter continue on a path of representing and celebrating the diversity of our sector in a couple ways this month:
The work we do has a tremendous impact on our communities, and just as we uphold the highest ethical standards for the sake of those communities, it is imperative that we welcome and empower every member of our communities in our work.
Thank you for the difference you choose to make. We’ll see you in August!
Wesley, Gentle, CFRE
AFP Fort Worth Metro Chapter President
