Let’s kick off this newsletter with two quick platitudes.
Not-for-profit corporations are uniquely able to empower our communities to overcome adversities. Leadership in the nonprofit sector comes with a responsibility to empower others to lead and make decisions.
Now for two non sequiturs:
When I was very young, there were certain words my mom only ever spoke to me in Spanish. Thus, those were the words I knew to use. I often recall a frustrating interaction with my pre-K instructor who helplessly gestured at condiments while I repeatedly requested lechuga for lunch. In her defense, toddlers don’t usually demand lettuce in any language.
Some two and a half decades later, Cathy R. Sheffield and Pat Miller asked if I would consider serving as president-elect for the AFP chapter Fort Worth Metro board of directors.
Now the point:
Admittedly, struggling to order veggies doesn’t quite qualify as adversity, but I’m sure you can relate to young Wesley in feeling like you don’t belong sometimes, somewheres... And just like that curly-haired Florida-child, many of the nonprofits in our community struggle to be understood by funders and donors who could provide the green they need to grow.
Likely you can also relate to almost-thirty-year-old Wesley in feeling recognized and trusted with a responsibility you cherish. As non-profit leaders, you know that feeling of belonging to something greater than you.
On October 16 (note the change from our regular second-Monday meeting!), you will want to be present for two awesome happenings.
First, our members get the opportunity to vote on a slate of new board members who will continuing building a welcoming and supportive community of non-profit fundraisers under the excellent leadership of President Hillary Bessinger, starting next January.
Second, we will have an extended educational session featuring an all-star panel of leaders in philanthropy and fundraising. They will help us see philanthropy through a lens of equity, so we can in turn help our nonprofit sector empower the communities we exist to serve.
Register today and mark your calendars to show up a bit earlier for a great day with AFP!
Hasta el 16 de Octubre!
