February 2024

February is Black History Month

The theme for 2024 is “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build”. This is also the tenth year of the International Decade for People of African Descent, and acknowledges that people of African descent represent a distinct group whose human rights must be promoted and protected.

AFP VI encourages members to learn more about the non-profits that serve Black people in their communities and support them if you can.

The Government of Canada has a website that provides information on topics such as:

- How Black History came to be recognized in Canada

- Biographies of Black Canadians who helped shape Canada

- Significant events in Black history in Canada

- The impact that organizations led by Black women in Canada have had on their communities and much more!

Let’s continue to celebrate, not just this month, but throughout the year.

CFRE Refresher Course 2024

The AFP CFRE Refresher Course offers development professionals an opportunity to review the main components of a complete fundraising program. It is an intensive program intended to provide an overview of the six knowledge domains of the CFRE exam. The course is not presented in a lecture format; rather, it is a combination of a high-level review, self-exploration of knowledge and peer exchange of best practices – all of which are facilitated by a knowledgeable fundraising practitioner using a caselet approach with components based on fundraising experience at the five-year level.

Job Postings

Salary range is now required for AFP Vancouver Island job postings

In line with AFP Global and in order to promote gender and racial pay equity, we require that a salary range be included for all job postings. This will make negotiations easier for both employer and candidate, and will also help save time and resources for employers by ensuring that those who apply are candidates whose skills, experience and salary expectations align with the requirements of the role.

In addition, research has shown that posting the salary range increases the reach and attention ads receive by 30%. AFP Vancouver Island job postings are an effective way for employers to reach qualified applicants, committed to the sector and we thank all past, present and future employers who choose to post with us.
