"It has long been the fastest-growing major aviation market in the world and before too long will be the biggest aviation market globally. But dealing with China, especially moving aircraft in and out of China on leases, requires some very special skills."

Association Update
From Nigel Marsh, Rolls-Royce plc
|
|
Dear AFRA Members,
What do mobile phones, vehicles, vacuum cleaners, washing machines and aeroplanes all have in common? Well, apart from providing a service to consumers they all consume materials in their manufacture and use and can also be a source of materials at the end of their service/life. But who's making the most of this? We have only just started the journey towards being a 'sustainable' world and many are only just starting to realise that there are finite resources on the planet. The recent impact of the hot weather globally is also starting to make people literally see the consequences of some of our activities and how our lifestyles are most likely impacting less favourable outcomes.
Fortunately, we're on more of a front foot in the aero sector where we have for some time been promoting service models that encourage making the most of our material resources through reuse, repair and refurbishment. Driven initially by the economics of the cost of ownership, there is increasing interest in how our products impact not only our carbon footprint but also our reliance on resources, some of which are critical in terms of either crustal abundance or their source, e.g. Conflict Minerals in the DRC.
So, turning to AFRA, we have a vital role to play in driving the Circular Economy and a sustainable sector. We are helping to move from take - use - dispose, to a model of reuse and recovery and to keeping materials in our own supply chain, rather than seeing them down-cycled and losing value. While we have some great credentials to share in this space, let's keep aiming to do more and to shout more about what we do. That means continuing to do what we do well but also looking for opportunities such as the recycling of newer materials like carbon fibre and composites. It's so much better being a leader rather than a follower!

Government Affairs Committee
Further to the European Commission's Communication on the Interface between Chemicals, Product and Waste, published in January 2018 as part of the mini-package on plastics, the European Commission released on 23 July a public consultation addressing the Interface between Chemicals, Product and Waste legislation and aims at assessing the reaction of stakeholders to the different options and questions posed in regard to the four main issues described in the Communication and accompanying Staff Working Document. The deadline for contributions is 29 October 2018.
The Interface poses a number of questions and proposes options to challenges related to insufficient information about substances of concern in products and waste and on how to define and track these; challenges related to substances of concern in recycled materials; and challenges related to uncertainties about how materials can cease to be waste and to improving certainty in the implementation of end-of-waste provisions.
The next Government Affairs Committee call will be held at 11am ET on Friday, August 31. Please
contact staff if you are interested in participating.
