Association Update
Dear AFRA Members,
With the year (and decade) coming to an end, it's the perfect time to take a step back and look at our achievements.
For the association itself, it has been a particularly busy year that has seen the launch of two new projects. These projects will focus on areas of direct relevance for the members and  should prepare us for the future . The first one is done in collaboration with ENVISA, and focuses on determining Aircraft End of Life KPIs, which aims to establish a methodology to measure the performance of the sector. The final conclusions of this project will be available early 2020. The second project, in collaboration with Associations Research Inc., collected data of the number of annual airplane disassemblies.  Both projects will provide essential output for the AFRA members, and will aid in positioning the organisation in discussions with regulators.
The discussions on circular economy, resource efficiency and waste prevention are resonating loudly on a political level, especially in Europe. It is therefore important that AFRA develop the necessary technical information and data, to enter into a constructive dialogue with those who write legislation. This year we also launched version 4.0 of our best practices manual, which is THE global voluntary standard for environmentally responsible aircraft disassembly & recycling. The best practices manual also provides guidance for facilities to operate in a safe and environmentally responsible fashion.
On behalf of the AFRA team, I would like to thank you again for the excellent collaboration in bringing the association forward, and I wish you a good start of 2020.
Best regards,
Hans Craen
AFRA Executive Director

Committee Updates
Government Affairs Committee
After a lengthy process, on 27 November, the European Parliament (EP) approved Ursula von der Leyen's team of Commissioners. The EP's vote demonstrates the continuing difficulties von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, will face getting a majority in Parliament for her different legislative initiatives. On 1 December, the College of Commissioners took office and will be in place for the next five years.
On 11 December, von der Leyen presented the main objectives of the European Green Deal. This long-term strategy will focus on the fight against climate change, circular economy, air and water quality, energy and agriculture. Within this European Green Deal, the Commission pledges to table a new circular economy action plan in March 2020, as part of a broader EU industrial strategy. It will include a sustainable product policy with "prescriptions on how we make things" in order to use less materials, and ensure products can be reused and recycled. The circular economy, including new waste and recycling laws, will represent "half" of the EU's effort to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and will be erected as "the number one priority" of the upcoming European Green Deal, officials have said.
On 26 & 27 of May 2020,  AFRA will be attending an event hosted by Chemical Recycling Europe to  discuss the challenges and latest developments in the area and future of chemical recycling with experts from the industry, research institutes, European and national authorities. Draft program will be soon available on this page.
