Association Update

Dear AFRA Members,

Happy New Year to all and I hope we have started off to a very successful year. I know that AFRA staff and leadership has some very ambitious goals to meet this year, but ones that will continue to ensure the success of the association. One of the main goals is to increase membership to contribute to the health of the association as well as an environmentally conscious aviation aftermarket.

On the committee front, the BMP committee was successful promulgating the 4.0 standards and all new audits are being conducted to this standard.  This committee will continue to focus on best practices and how to implement procedures that meet the mission statement of the association as well as introduce opportunities gained from the R&D committee.

Regarding the R&D committee, they were quite productive in 2019 and completed the KPI project.  Under the leadership of Dale Smith and with the help of ENVISA, the committee was able to outline a metric for the dismantling of aircraft. This groundbreaking work will allow companies to strive to different levels to show how they are working to reduce their environmental impact.

The communication committee has been hard at work developing new workshops for this year's conference. Our workshops have been well attended in the past but we look forward to bringing you fresh content and speakers.  With that in mind if you have an interest in contributing to the conference please reach out as we are always looking for more content.

Finally I would ask that if you have any questions, ideas or concerns you reach out to your board members.  We are very interested in how the association can best serve it's membership.

Best regards,
Brent Webb
AFRA President

Committee Updates
Government Affairs Committee

On 23 rd December, the European Commission (EC) published its roadmap for the new Circular Economy Action Plan. The EU Circular Economy action plan is the key initiative under the new Commission's European Green deal. This roadmap defines the scope, the objectives to be met and explains why action is needed. According to the roadmap, the Circular Economy Action plan will affect the waste regulation, the waste shipment directive, the REACH regulation, as well as product design and the end of life legislations. According to the EC, the new action plan will accelerate the transition towards a circular economy, reinforcing the EU's industrial base, while contributing to fighting climate change and preserving its natural environment. A public consultation on this roadmap took place. The AFRA secretariat prepared and sent out a draft to the Government Affairs Committee members for approval. The document was submitted to the EC prior to the deadline on January 20, 2020.
On January 15, 2020, Members of the European Parliament voted in support of the European Green Deal. In other words, to become climate neutral by 2050, with a higher 2030 emission reductions goal of 55% and in support of an ambitious sustainable investment plan.
Furthermore, a new monitoring tool, i.e. the AFRA Issue Tracker has been developed by the AFRA secretariat to facilitate follow up on the different policy issues the AFRA secretariat is monitoring.  If you wish to receive the AFRA issue tracker and take part in the government affairs committee, please contact  AFRA staff.
