Industry News
"Two Democrats on the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee on Thursday introduced legislation to mandate numerous aviation safety recommendations in the wake of two fatal Boeing 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people and led to the plane's grounding in March."
- Reuters

"For all the fears of a global economic slowdown, putting people on a plan is still a moneymaking proposition. But putting goods on a plane might not be. Demand for global airfreight - measured in freight tonne kilometers - dropped 3.3% in the year through August, IATA said last week. Global airfreight volumes have been falling for 10 consecutive months year over year, the longest losing streak since the 2008 financial crisis."
- Wall Street Journal

"'This is the future of aviation,' Oskar Meijerink tells me in a cafe in Rotterdam airport. His company, in partnership with the airport's owners, is planning the world's first commercial production of jet fuel made, in part, from carbon dioxide (CO2). Based at the airport, it will work by capturing CO2, the gas which contributes to global warming, from the air."

Committee Updates
Government Affairs Committee

The last Government Affairs Committee Call took place on October 11, 2019 from 10-11am EDT. During the call, participants discussed upcoming policy developments, such as the European Commission's Green deal and the circular economy 2.0 initiative. Both should be announced within the first 100 days of the next European Commission taking office. Such initiatives will aim to achieve a common EU model for separate waste collection and a sound management of chemicals, leading to a zero pollution Europe. Over the last months, AFRA staff have been tracking the work of the European Parliament and the European Commission following the recent elections and identifying the different stakeholders which AFRA will have to work closely with over the next 5 years. During the last committee meeting, issues surrounding the definition and interpretation of waste were also discussed, as well as a potential EU regulation on the EoL of aircrafts. For more information and/or to participate in this committee, please email  AFRA staff.
