Board Update
From Nigel Marsh, Rolls-Royce plc
|
|
Making Connections:
As well as being a Director of AFRA, I am also a Director of the International Aerospace Environmental Group (IAEG) where I have recently I have been working on developing an aerospace sector guide for implementation of the new ISO14001:2015 standard. This latest version of the environmental management systems standard is interesting as for the first time it talks about businesses taking a
life cycle perspective
to their activities and also about '
sustainability'
. This of course fits so well with our work in AFRA as we're all about getting the maximum value out of aircraft at EoL/Service. Not only is this very cost effective for operators and owners but it also plays strongly to the developing need to have sustainable approaches to the use of raw materials. This change in emphasis should help us to become better connected with OEMs as they design for reuse and recycling and optimise the use of products and related parts.
At the same time I am also reminded of the presentation
at the recent AFRA/ASA conference in Las Vegas by Chris Markou of IATA. He gave an excellent overview of the participants in aircraft decommissioning and the interaction of both quality and environmental management systems. He also remarked that the combination of a large number of aircraft produced a low retirement rate so far, and that the introduction of the follow-up models (with new more efficient technology) will drive a retirement wave for aircraft such as 737 NG, A320 family, 777 and A330.
All together you get the sense that we're all becoming more connected and that this can only realise lots of opportunities for us to add even more value in the life cycle of aircraft, and to make a bigger contribution to sustainable aviation. If you get a moment, do take a look at Chris's presentation.
Best Regards,
Nigel Marsh

Government Affairs Program
Thank you to everyone who completed the recent AFRA government affairs survey - the response rate was excellent! Based on the feedback, it is clear that outreach to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) should be a priority because FAA is the regulatory agency that has the greatest likelihood to affect AFRA member companies. The survey results also indicated that a lack of regulation could potentially lower the quality standards for the aircraft recycling and dismantling industry.
As a result of the membership's input, the AFRA Board of Directors instructed the Association to engage proactively with congressional offices and regulatory agencies to increase awareness of AFRA and its BMP to promote environmentally responsible, safe end-of-life aircraft disassembly and recycling practices. We will focus our efforts in the U.S. for the remainder of 2016 and then expand our outreach to other parts of the world in 2017.
While we provide outreach and engagement to federal policymakers, AFRA will also coordinate with allied organizations when there are logical synergies. One such meeting occurred recently at AFRA headquarters when our management staff and government affairs consultant met with the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). AFRA and ISRI were able to identify a number of areas where our two organizations can work together going forward.
