Industry News
"As a report claims that airlines are struggling to control their contribution to the climate crisis, the questions grows more urgent for aviation: does it have a greener future, and will a zero-emission plane ever fly? Executives hope a combination of sustainable fuels, offsetting and improving flight paths can play a part in reducing aviation's footprint and commercial reality. For now, the best long-term hope for the airline industry appears to be electric planes."
- The Guardian

"The Boeing 737 Max, grounded for the last six months after two fatal crashes, might not return to service in every country on the same timeline, depending on when global regulators deem the plane airworthy, CEO Dennis Muilenburg said Wednesday.  The manufacturer has developed a software fix for the jets, its best-selling plane, but hasn't yet submitted it to regulators for approval."

"The application of a truly disruptive technology or business practice can transform an industry practically overnight... In the aftermarket as a whole, however, change has occurred incrementally and not via any quantum leaps. Line and heavy maintenance are still almost as touch-labor reliant as they ever were, although new technologies have promoted efficiencies in many tasks."

Association Update
Dear AFRA Members,
I hope you are all having a successful and productive year! Earlier this week we hosted an AFRA Networking Reception alongside ISTAT EMEA in Berlin, which was attended by over 40 members and non-members alike. This reception featured a beautiful venue while providing an excellent opportunity for networking in a relaxed environment.

We are staying busy with the many projects AFRA has going on and I wanted to update you specifically on a couple of exciting things AFRA is doing.

First is the recycling metric project with ENVISA.  Currently, there are no industry standards to evaluate quantitatively the success of aircraft (specifically fixed-wing, commercial airplanes) dismantling and recycling processes. For that reason, AFRA is looking for a way to determine how well a project, process, company, or the industry is performing. Such a metric will be used to determine further research, targets, and best available techniques.
ENVISA has narrowed this metric to six KPIs and is currently awaiting feedback from AFRA members. ENVISA is planning to finish the project in the coming weeks.

As part of the Association's ongoing efforts to continue to provide value to its members and the industry, we are coordinating a new program initiative, the AFRA Annual Data Collection Report of Aircraft Disassembly.
AFRA has been working with Association Research, Inc. (ARI) to conduct an annual survey to collect the number of aircraft disassemblies for the year (2018). Thirteen AFRA members have contributed and ARI has shared a final draft report with AFRA staff.

Thank you to the members that have contributed to and participated in these projects and we are excited to share some results soon!

Best regards,
Hans Craen
AFRA Executive Director

He is expected to defend his new position at his hearing with PECH and ENVI Committee of the European Parliament on 3 rd October 2019. The next Government Affairs Committee Call will take place 11 October from 10-11am EDT. For more information and/or to participate in this committee, please email  AFRA staff.
