SCIENCE

North American Journal of Fisheries Management

Risky Main Stems Are a Poorly Understood Constraint on Salmon Recovery in Coastal California Rivers

Authors observed low and variable main-stem emigration survival of acoustically tagged juvenile Coho Salmon in two California rivers. This highlights the importance of identifying and understanding the drivers of mortality in main-stem rivers during this brief yet vulnerable period in the life of anadromous salmonids.

Marine and Coastal Fisheries

A Novel Approach to Evaluate the Effects of Offshore Energy Infrastructure on the Northern Gulf of America Shrimp Fleet

Offshore rigs affect the behavior of shrimp trawling vessels on the Louisiana–Texas continental shelf, with vessels generally avoiding rigs by modifying their trawling in areas with high rig densities. Understanding these responses can assist future marine planning to balance energy development and fisheries sustainability.

FISHERIES

Defining Hybridization Thresholds for Native Species Conservation in the Genomic Era

The authors of this paper use extensive data from Westslope Cutthroat Trout to describe how objective, data-based decision frameworks can be developed to help managers conserve genetic variation, while minimizing nonnative ancestry and the risk of outbreeding depression.

Clarity over Complexity: Statistical Reporting that Resonates

Effective statistical reporting is essential for the credibility, reproducibility, and advancement of scientific research. Despite existing guidelines, many researchers feel underprepared to handle increasingly complex statistical methods. This article reviews common issues in statistical reporting and offers practical recommendations for clarity, transparency, and objectivity.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Upcoming Webinar: Science Communication Through Emotionally Charged Extreme Events

This session is supported by the AFS Climate Committee and Science Communication Section.
