Chanukah - An eight-day Jewish holiday known as the Festival of Lights. It commemorates the
rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C.E. when the Jews rose up against and defeated their Greek-Syrian oppressors. It is the quintessential story of freedom versus oppression and assimilation.
Speaking of freedom, last week the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Taylor Force Act, a bill to reduce U.S. funding for "Palestinian" Arabs unless official "Palestinian" officials stop subsidizing the families of killers. The Taylor Force Act was named in honor of Taylor Force, a West Point graduate who had served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, and was stabbed to death while with a Vanderbilt University tour group in Israel.
The Taylor Force Act, although imperfect, will help to right a terrible wrong - the rewarding of "Palestinian" terrorist acts. It will help to free Israelis and others from becoming victims of terror by reducing the motivation for terrorist acts being carried out.
Nowadays the entire world lives under the constant threat of terror. Witness the somewhat botched attack today in New York City that wounded a handful of individuals, but had the potential to cause major loss of life and significant damage. This particular attack was carried out by a 27 year old Muslim Bangladeshi who had been living in the U.S. for seven years. According to reports, and unsurprisingly, this terrorist claimed to carry out his attack as an act of revenge for Israeli actions in Gaza.
So, as we enter this cold winter season, may Chanukah - the Festival of Lights - spread a warm light of freedom on those under the yoke of malevolent regimes around the world and on those under the constant threat of terror. And may this Festival of Freedom be extended once and for all to all Jews who want to build their lives freely anywhere in the Land of Israel.
