National accreditation has regulatory recognition for child welfare and behavioral healthcare by two federal and many state authorities. Recognition can include: accreditation mandates for certification, licensure or reimbursement; for regulatory relief; or encouragement to improve quality of service delivery.

Here are a few state examples:

In the state of Washington, not only does national accreditation provide regulatory relief, it also results in reduced licensing fees.

In Maryland and Oklahoma, mental health and substance use treatment providers need to be accredited in order to be licensed/certified to provide services.

There are also examples on the national front:

Full certification for Opioid Treatment Programs requires accreditation within one year of provisional certification and accreditation is one of the reimbursement requirements for qualified residential treatment centers.

COA, CARF, and The Joint Commission attempt to keep informed on all accreditation recognitions and share this information with providers.
