AGASC Members Newsletter

Fall 2023

President's Letter

Happy Holidays! Hope this newsletter finds you busy working on your glass art, be it for the upcoming Gallery 21 Show, the Guild or just your own pleasure. The annual Gallery 21 Show starts December 5th with intake of art and painting of all the pedestals for the show. You should have received emails with all the information about the show already.

Elections for the upcoming year are upon us. Members should have received an email to nominate candidates for President and Treasurer. Then a ballot was emailed to you to vote for the President and Treasurer. Please send back your vote because we need your participation to meet our non-profit requirements.

Our next general meeting to start off the 2024 year will be Sunday, January 14 at Tom Marosz's studio. It is a fun meeting where you get to see and talk with members while enjoying a potluck. More information will be sent out when it gets closer. Try to make it to the meeting because we ask for ideas that our members would like to participate.

It has been a good year and we are working to make the AGASC even better next year.

Fall Patio Sale

It was a beautiful weekend for the event in Spanish Village, Balboa Park. This year it was held on Saturday October 14 and Sunday October 15. There were several new members participating and everyone had a great time.

Kari Minnick Workshop

"Drawing on Abstraction"

A four day intensive workshop was held at Susan Hirsch's Studio in San Marcos on Wednesday November 8 through November 11.

What an amazing amount of information! Kari had a great approach to get you to push the abstraction of your work by using a variety of drawing, cutting and assembling to dissect and refocus on individual elements. Though a variety of techniques in powders, paints and pastes she guided the group to make studies in black and white and color on single layers. After firing and reviewing both front and back views and adding more materials they were encouraged to cut them up and reassemble. Then several layers were stacked to put into a mold to create a thick work. The outcome was stunning and lots of new approaches learned in the class will help each person to explore the possibilities in future work.

Fallbrook Art Glass Show

This year the Galaxy of Glass show was quite different including a new name. The show’s theme was Capturing Light, Art and Nature and had geodes interspersed among the art glass. New this year, was a section dedicated to neon art which was a big hit. Unlike the Galaxy of Glass glass shows held in the past, artists installed their own work. Artists grouped their own work together so the overall effect was quite different in an open space. For the first time there was a special reception for the KPBS Producers Club two weeks after the show opened. With so many beautiful examples of Glass Art in the show we hope it was very successful.

Members Participation outside the AGASC

AGASC member, Krista Heron Spent September at Pilchuck Glass School in a residency with Richard Parrish and Steve Klein.

A Workshop at Corning Studio by Susan Hirsch

Taking a two-week intensive workshop with Martin Janecky at the Corning Studio in August was an amazing experience I will never forget! I first saw the workshop in January when Corning posted the schedule for summer classes and was so excited that he would be teaching in the US. I signed up right away but had to wait until March to see if I made it into the class. It was my first trip to The Studio at Corning and everyone who had been there said they loved it. Martin spends 4-5 hours demoing each day as his work is very detailed and time-consuming to create. He let us get up close and answered questions on the spot as he worked. He reviewed making hands and faces several times making sure we would understand the importance of the set-up. He stressed that you must repeat time after time to get it right before going on to detailing. Despite being so talented and world-renowned, he was one of the most genuine and caring teachers. The class was limited to nine students in the larger Hot Glass Studio with three glory holes. It takes three per bench to make these pieces. They provided a torch and a fluffy at each bench along with Jason Jenson's special inside tools. The other students were more experienced in hot glass, but they all were very generous in helping me.

The Ice Furnace Glass Show

Krista Heron was invited to exhibit for Venice Glass Week this year. The show, “The Ice Furnace” was held at Castello Gallery in Venice, Italy, and showcased the works of seven artists. All artists are inspired by ice and exploring its relationship to glass. The artists were selected and the show was curated by Costanza Longanesi Cattani. Congratulations!
