Letter from the President
I would like to tell you what the AGASC has been up to and what is coming up. The AGASC tries to offer a wide vary of events for our members to participate in and enjoy getting together with fellow artists.
We had two great workshops this summer: a four day casting workshop with Stephen Edwards and a two day cold working workshop with Stephanie Close. Also, the Guild held their Patio Show and Sale in the rain and the AGASC went on a very informative tour of Tim Harlan's Studio in San Juan Capistrano.
The AGASC's second General Meeting this year was held at Kathleen Mitchell's studio. After the meeting we had an impressive demo of Venetian Glass technique in goblet making.
Our membership's annual show is coming up in September. I hope you are all working on some wonderful art to put in the show. All member artists are welcomed to show their art in the show. Go to our website (agasc.org) to register. We are having the Glass Boutique (gift shop) again this year. The show's reception is on Sunday, September 22, so please try to attend and check out all of your fellow artists' amazing work. I would also like to thank our sponsors Oceanside Glass & Tile and Coatings by Sandberg, Inc. for their continued support of our exhibitions.
Hope to see you at the show,
Jack Wade,
President AGASC

A Tour of Tim Harlan's Studio
in San Juan Capistrano
By Jon Simpson
A group of AGASC members drove up to San Juan Capistrano in May for a tour of Tim Harlan's studio. When we got there Tim was standing in the doorway greeting everyone and his wife Pat was in the studio talking with members who were already there. The studio is on the smallish side, but don't let that fool you. Every inch is taken up with equipment, workbenches and lots of artwork.
Tim started his presentation at the front of the studio and worked his way around from there. Starfish molds were in the front and Tim described the clever way he got them. On around the room were a dozen or so gorgeous drop bowls and sushi dishes. He explained that the reason he got into making the drop bowls was because they were the closest thing he could make that resembled the blown glass he used to make. Some of the drop bowls were small, but some were 10-12 inches across and 8 inches deep. When asked how he made them so large, he explained that he uses a three bowl slumping process, with each one progressively larger. He explained how he puts the beautiful landscape scenes on them. He talked a little about the cold working equipment lined up against the back wall and what he uses each for. He then talked a little bit about his beautiful resin handled knives he makes.
There were several photos hanging around the studio that were important to Tim and he focused on them as he told us the story behind each one. The one I was most impressed with was of Murano, Italy. Maestro Elio Quarisa called in 2001 and asked if Tim could come to Murano for a week or two. Tim would be making kiln fired glass panels and Elio would be rolling them up. Needless to say, he went to Murano.
We went to lunch afterward at a restaurant across the street from the mission at San Juan Capistrano. We returned to the studio for one last question and answer session and to say our good byes.

"MAKING MEMORIES"
Lost Wax Casting and Mold Making Workshop With Stephen Dee Edwards
By Devora Safran
Eight committed glass artists from the San Diego area participated in a sold out 4 day workshop exploring glass casting and the mold making process! Every participant in the workshop held at Susan Hirsch's studio in San Marcos, had 10 to 40 years experience in making glass of some sort, so it was a devoted and power packed group of artists.
Steve Edwards came out of retirement to teach the workshop, (convinced by Marti Blair, who recruited him while on an AGASC field trip to Ojai.) Steve is a formidable glass artist, and retired professor of Alfred University. He was raised in Southern California, spent 30 years in New York teaching glass, was a former president of GAS and is now enjoying life in Ojai casting glass and playing bluegrass music. I'm sure his resume is extensive as he has worked with many famous glass masters of our time. Susan Hirsch hosted the workshop in her beautifully well appointed San Marcos studio.
We jumped right into the workshop with only 4 days to complete 3 projects each! We each made a mold of our hand to get things started. Each person brought a meaningful item from which to cast a mold. The process is simple, yet complex at the same time with many steps to get to the final product. Everyone was focused, and the energy swayed from intense concentration to lighthearted singing and laughter. Firing schedules were set, reset and changed again to accommodate for time constraints. Wax was melted and reused. Silicone was used by the case. I can't wait to see the final outcome of our efforts.
As a human being, Steve Edwards touched each and every one of us, with his knowledge, his humility, and his kindness. His enthusiasm and encouragement will last each of us for a long time to come. He took the time to connect with each of us as individual artists and as human beings on this artistic path we have each chosen. My life, (and I know I speak for all of us) was enriched tremendously by my interaction with Steve. I am educated, encouraged and a tiny bit enlightened by his presence in my life. I am grateful. Steve IS the light of love within us all.

AGASC Cold Working Workshop
With Stephanie Close
By Jack Wade
For the few that got to take the cold working workshop from Stephanie Close this June, it was very informative, hands on and fun. The first thing Stephanie did was to go over safety procedures and gear. Then Stephanie and Tom Marosz showed us several pieces of cold working equipment at Tom's glass studio in Spring Valley, which included two lap wheels, a rociprolap, a belt sander, Dremel, a wet grinder, a cerium wheel, a huge wet tile saw and a lathe.
We spent two days learning and refining our cold working techniques. We started off grinding and polishing small pieces of optic glass supplied by Tom. Once comfortable with the equipment we moved to working on pieces of our own. Stephanie worked with us answering questions, demonstrating what's the best way to use the equipment, explaining what we did wrong and how to correct it.
Thank you Stephanie and Tom, we can now take this knowledge and apply it to our artwork.
GREAT NEWS! Because this workshop sold out Stephanie is offering another October 19 and 20. Sign up at
Workshops AGASC.org.
