AGASC Members Newsletter

Spring 2026

President's Letter

Our first newsletter for 2026 starts with a welcoming of the year with fun and information about glass. We started with our Annual Holiday party held at Krista Heron’s home. Story and photos are detailed in this newsletter. Then our first General meeting of the year was held in January. It was held at Norma and Tom Marosz studio where we announced the results of our election for this year which returned our President Jack Wade and Treasurer Diana Griffin. We also have a new Membership Chair, Carin Pratt and a new position of Emerging Artist Chair, Catia Edquist. I want to thank those who took the time to vote. We need the participation of our members for our nonprofit status.

We had an in-person presentation and potluck event featuring Alexander Rosenberg, the new head of the Glass Center at UCSD Craft Center on March 5 at Heron Studios.

We are planning on having more Zoom lectures from prominent glass artists this year. If you have any glass artist you would like to have lecture contact either Krista Heron or Kathleen Mitchell.

We may try and get a road trip planned for the AGA this year. Fingers crossed.

I hope everybody is looking forward to another exciting year of glass and friendship.

Jack Wade

President AGASC

The Conrad Prebys Awards

by Susan Hirsch

The Prebys Foundation contacted me and wanted to know if I could make awards for the 2026 Prebys Leadership Awardees. The awards are for outstanding community service. When I saw that the logo for the foundation was a hummingbird, I contacted Nic McGuire, to collaborate in making a special sculpture. With his help and Taryn Jayne (who made the flowers), we produced these lovely awards. The base is engraved with the Award Name and honorees' names and the "All In for San Diego" slogan. Nic and I attended the Awards Ceremony at the Soap Factory in Downtown San Diego.

Alex Rosenberg Artist Talk
UC San Diego Glass Center

On March 5th, the Art Glass Association hosted a lecture and potluck at Krista Heron’s Studio. Alex Rosenberg, the new Assistant Director of the UC San Diego Glass Center, came to talk about his artwork and career in glass. It was very interesting finding out about his experience with the BLOWN AWAY series and four years as director of the Wheaton Arts Glass Studio. He spoke about his work and answered questions from the group. Then he spoke about the new Glass Center and the opportunities that it will be offering. He will be working alongside Annika Nelson, Senior Director of Craft and Glass Centers.  The new facilities include a state-of-the-art hot shop with four benches and two 400lb electric furnaces, a spacious cold shop with an extensive array of modern cold-working equipment, a flame-working studio with 13 benches and lathe, a fabrication studio outfitted to support several welding and metal finishing processes, and (eventually) a selection of equipment for kiln casting, fusing, and slumping. The UC San Diego Glass Center is open to everyone, prioritizing accessibility and cultivating a relaxed, welcoming environment for all.

The AGASC Holiday Party

The Annual AGASC “Holiday” Party, now held in January instead of December, always has a theme so we can all dress up and be silly! This year, it was “What was I thinking”? using things out of your closet instead of making or buying a costume. We all got to vote on the best costume and although there were many fun and unique combinations, Tom Marosz won in a landslide. Who can resist a man in his underwear! Reminiscent of Village People. Krista is the best hostess and provided a great dinner, with appetizers and desserts brought by everyone. The gift exchange is always the big event because of the stealing option. Everyone knows if you get something good, it will likely get stolen, but that is part of the fun.
