AGASC Members Newsletter

Spring/Summer 2025

President's Letter

Letter from the President,

Summer is here and I would like to tell you what's up with the Art Glass Association of Southern California.

We are returning to Coatings by Sandberg on August 12th for a tour and sale just for our group.

Our AGASC 44 Annual Exhibition this year is going to be held October 21st - November 3rd, with Saturday the 25th for the reception and Friday the 24th for judging. Every year, our show grows in quality thanks to our very talented artist members, along with all the volunteers who put the exhibition together.

The AGASC has so far this year had a lecture/demo by Kazuki Takizawa held at Nottingham Studio. It was an amazing glassblowing demo and a lecture on artists and mental health.

We also held a Zoom lecture with Carol Milne. It was held at Krista Heron’s new space. Zoom is a new way we can bring noted glass artists before our group at affordable costs to our organization. We also had a cold working workshop put on by fellow member Tom Marosz.

We have a website that is for all our members to check out. You can access our events, classes, and member resources through our website. We encourage you to explore the site. The site is AGASC.org.

Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. Our Board is here to support you and the art glass community in Southern California.

Best regards,

Jack Wade

President AGASC

Bob Sloan Passes Away

Long-time member and glassblower Bob Sloan recently passed away. He will be sorely missed.

In Loving Memory of Pat Warren

by Kathleen Mitchell

I knew Pat Warren for most of my adult life. She was not only an extremely talented stained glass artist but also a great supporter of all AGASC members. Many times when I was working at the Guild she would come in looking to buy a present for a friend. A glass artist buying from other glass artists!

She was also very generous with her studio. How many wonderful potluck meetings did we have there? How many of those GIANT sandwiches did she supply? How many times as we were leaving, did she say, “Take some with you, I’m not going to eat all this!”

And then there was her smile. That smile was so sincere and could light up a room.

I miss you Pat Warren. We all do. Pat passed away unexpectedly on March 7, 2025.

Her daughter Carrie will continue with the business.

Pat’s 1502 Glassworks

Is Still Open!

Since Pat has passed away, many people have asked if 1502 Glassworks is still open. Her daughter, Carrie Warren has moved back to San Diego to manage the company. You can visit the website at Pat's 1502 Glassworks.

AGASC is Going to Coatings by Sandberg

Tuesday, August 12, 2025

It's that time of year again. It's time to take a carpool trip to Coatings by Sandberg or CBS, as we know it. It is about a 1.5-hour drive up the I-5 and we will meet and begin the tour at 10:30. If you arrive early you can go to the restroom and get a look at all of the dichroic glass in the foyer or MODA (Museum of Dichroic Art). After the tour and sale, we will go to lunch at Rutabegorz, a funky restaurant in downtown Orange that has the best food. Then we will drive home, or some may want to go Hollander's (20 minutes away) or Pacific Art Glass (30 minutes away).

For those who are new to AGASC, CBS is a special trip. They give a wonderful tour of their production facilities and answer any of your questions. Then, they have several tables of CEO 90 and CEO 96 dichroic squares, tube products, 1/4 sheets and full sheets at wholesale prices. It's a dichroic candy store!

AGASC Zoom Demo/Lecture with Carol Milne

by Krista Heron

In April, the association hosted an engaging webinar with the incredibly talented Carol Milne, renowned for her intricate sculpting and weaving wax techniques and cast glass. The presentation featured videos of her recent exhibitions and offered an in-depth look at her unique process. Beyond showcasing her techniques, Carol generously shared her extensive expertise during a lively question-and-answer session. The event was held at Krista’s emerging studio in Bird Rock and was well attended. We look forward to offering more educational sessions like this in the future.

Exhibition with the San Diego River Artists’ Alliance at the Hyde Gallery, Grossmont College by Cathy Coverley
From March 24 - April 24, Cathy Coverley exhibited 5 sculptures and 3 Wall Art pieces at the Hyde Gallery, Grossmont College, with the San Diego River Artists’ Alliance.
Each of the 12 artists exhibiting was allowed 12 linear feet of Gallery Space - Yahoo! So I went big with “A Secret Spot”, 51” x 51”, which was beautifully positioned at the end of the gallery, taking up most of the wall space there. So Cool! Alex DeCosta, the gallery manager, did all the installation, postcards, posters, and signage - Wow!
The San Diego River Artists’ Alliance is affiliated with the San Diego River Park Foundation and donates a percentage of sales to further their goals of restoring the River Habitat and making a walking trail from Dog Beach to Julian.
Many thanks to all of you who were able to attend the Reception!

Spotlight on Kazuki Takizawa: Inspiring Art and

Mental Health Awareness

by Krista Heron

In March, Nottingham Center for the Arts had the privilege of hosting the renowned artist Kazuki Takizawa for a captivating presentation and glass-blowing demonstration. Over 60 attendees gathered to experience Kazuki’s unique artistry, which beautifully intertwines a message of mental health awareness.

During the event, Kazuki shared past installations and candidly spoke about his personal journey with bipolar disorder, shedding light on the power of creativity as a form of healing and expression. The highlight of the day was the live demonstration where Kazuki skillfully blew a large vessel incorporating black and clear murrine.

This exceptional piece will be auctioned at our upcoming Annual Members Exhibition in October. Kazuki has generously pledged to donate a portion of the auction proceeds to the AGASC, in support of our association.

We thank Kazuki for his inspiring contribution and look forward to seeing how his work continues to impact our community.
