September 2023

September is World Alzheimer's Month

World Alzheimer’s Month unites individuals and organizations who dedicate their time toward education, sensitizing, and supporting existing efforts.

This year’s theme: Never Too Early, Never Too Late, encourages awareness at all stages of life. Given the continuous stigma and misinformation around Alzheimer’s and other dementias and the ever-growing numbers, it is crucial to recognize the risk factors as well as continuously treat those who have already been diagnosed.

AGI Welcomes YOU!

Whether you are living with dementia, caring for or close to someone affected by the disease, we invite you for an afternoon of information, education, fun and leisure.

We encourage you to come meet the AGI team, experience the incredible therapeutic programs we offer, and learn how the members of our team can best support YOU!

Join us this World Alzheimer’s Day to explore how we can support you EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

Music Therapy:

The Ballad of Gordon Miller

Happy Birthday to Jean!

Gordon Miller has been virtually attending weekly individual music therapy sessions at AGI for over a year now. Gord loves to share stories about his life, which sparked the idea for him to compose an autobiographical song with the help of AGI’s music therapist over the course of their sessions together. The final result was a composition, “The Ballad of Gordon Miller”, which showcases and celebrates Gord’s professional and personal successes, while conveying messages of love and gratitude towards his wife and family. A recording of the song was lovingly gifted to his wife, Jean, on her 75th birthday, who listened while surrounded by close family members.

“[The music therapist] had told me that it was his own words. To hear the ballad finished was amazing and a wonderful keep sake.” – Gord’s wife, Jean

“My whole extended family listened to it together with my dad beaming with pride. It couldn’t have been a better birthday gift for my mother.” – Daughter of Gord and Jean

“I wanted to personally send you a very heartfelt thank you for the beautiful ballad you wrote with my dad in honor of my mom's birthday. It was absolutely beautiful, and we so appreciate your hard work and your time with my father” – Son of Gord and Jean

Previous Kids Workshop

Let's Talk About Dementia

On August 17th, AGI held the first session of our newly developed workshop:

Let’s Talk About Dementia.

A diagnosis of dementia will impact family members in different ways, and may be difficult for children to understand the changes they see in their loved one. That is what inspired AGI to develop this workshop for kids aged 9 to 13, intended as an opportunity for both child and adult to learn together.

AGI counsellor and art therapist Karin Derouaux discussed the topic on CBC Let’s Go with Sabrina Marandola to bring awareness to the event. The full interview is available here.

Listen to the interview

The two-hour workshop was deemed a success by those who attended, one child demonstrated his newly acquired understanding of dementia and memory with a video available to view on our social media.
