ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

All current members of the Lake of Bays Association will receive their Notice of Annual General Meeting next week. The notice will contain instructions on how to register.


Guest Speaker: Chris Collings,
Township of Lake of Bays By-Law Enforcement Officer
Chris has worked in both the private and public sectors, in fields ranging from industrial hazardous waste to industrial hygiene, and from environmental enforcement to by-law enforcement. Chris will speak about:
  • what is (and isn’t) covered by township by-laws;
  • how by-laws are enforced;
  • roles of both residents and officers in by-law enforcement; and
  • the new township Noise Control by-law.
Safe Quiet Lakes’ third lake activity survey is well underway and we are reaching out to remind you to participate.  
 
If you have already completed the survey, thank you! Please pass this along to your family, friends and neighbours. We want to hear from all stakeholders, whether you drive a powerboat, paddle a canoe, sail, swim, wakeboard or waterski ... whether you are a waterfront resident, part time renter, live in town, visitor - ANYONE who spends time on or by the water in Muskoka and Georgian Bay regions.

The survey looks at what people value from their lake experience, how they use the water and what their boating activity concerns are. This helps develop programs for you based on the priorities of lake users as well as providing information for advocacy and action by Safe Quiet Lakes. Past survey data has been shared with Transport Canada, municipalities, the OPP and boating organizations.

Your responses are confidential. This research is being conducted in partnership with Marketing Research and Business Intelligence Program of Algonquin College, Ontario. The Fire rating is now set at MODERATE.

Small fires are permitted in most rural areas of Muskoka keeping in mind that NO DAYTIME BURNING is allowed. You must have adequate tools and water to extinguish the fire if the need arises and you must be with your fire at all times. Consult with your local By-law Department for outdoor burning regulations in your municipality.
Light to Protect the Night
As we move into prime summer stargazing months, we would like to remind everyone of the Township of Lake of Bays Dark Sky By-law, which encourages use of low wattage, energy efficient lighting in waterfront and rural areas to:
  • reduce impact on wildlife;
  • prevent hazards to navigation;
  • to preserve the night sky; and
  • to preserve privacy.
Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting

USEFUL: All Light Should Have a Clear Purpose
Before installing or replacing a light, determine if light is needed. Consider how the use of light will impact the area, including wildlife, the environment and your neighbours. Consider using reflective paints or self-luminous markers for signs, curbs and steps to reduce the need for permanently installed outdoor lighting.
TARGETED: Light Sound be Directed Only to Where Needed
Use shielding and careful aiming to target the direction of the light beam so that it points downward and does not spill beyond where it is needed.
LOW LIGHT LEVELS: Light Should be no Brighter Than Necessary
Use the lowest light level required. Be mindful of surface conditions as some surfaces may reflect more light into the night sky than intended.
CONTROLLED: Light Should be Used Only When it is Useful
Use controls such as timers or motion detectors to ensure that light is available when it is needed, dimmed when possible, and turned off when not needed.
COLOUR: Use Warmer Colour Lights Where Possible
Limit the amount of shorter wavelength (blue-violet) light to the least amount needed.
