A Note from Coach John
Summer schedule changes are around the corner starting June 28 through August 21. For our returning swimmers, you are likely aware that we will start to see an increased number of children during that time. For new comers, you will start to see our Summer Day Campers who we welcome into the pool as part of their daily programming.

While the influx of children will mostly impact the Upper East Side, Battery Park City will experience changes as well. I hope, that for many of you, like me, this will be a welcome sign of a return to normalcy, and these groups of excited and chattering children brighten your day. Stay tuned for updated schedules.

Additionally, you are likely aware that Asphalt Green drains the pools for major maintenance and deep cleaning every year at summer’s end. This will take place August 22 through September 7 this year. There will be no practices at this time. This two week period is critical in keeping our pools functional for the other 50 weeks of the year! We appreciate your patience and understanding.

If you have any questions, my door is always open. Please feel free to email me at jbeck@asphaltgreen.org.

See you at the pool,

–Coach John

Are You Interested in USMS National Short Course Championships?

A few of you have already confirmed that you are attending the 2021 USMS Short Course National Championship, July 21-25 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Whether you have been waiting to see how the vaccination roll-out proceeds, what family plans are on the horizon this summer, or if the meet is even happening—now is the time to register! I spoke with Bill Brenner at USMS last week and he assured me that the meet is a go! RSVP today.

USMS anticipates limiting the number of participants and extending each event from four days to five to make social distancing possible. Event organizers are working on additional measures to ensure the safety of participants. New information and changes will be announced when finalized. Full meet information is expected when registration opens in late May.

Wondering if you are fast enough? Check out qualifying times!
Masks Still Required at Asphalt Green

New York state announced that it will end mask mandates for fully vaccinated people beginning tomorrow, May 19. We are very excited by this news, however, we need more time to evaluate the safest course forward for our community. For now, Asphalt Green will continue to require masks at all times except while swimming at our facilities.

Many of our visitors are children who are still not eligible to receive the vaccine. Our goal is to update our mask policies as soon as possible, but we must do so in a way that ensures safety for everyone who comes through our doors. We are also still responsible for all New York State Department of Health guidelines, which have not yet been updated.

In the meantime, wear a mask, socially distance, and continue to follow the protocols that have kept us all safe.
