Help in Keeping Our Sport a Safe Place

In today's day and age we find the topic of abuse to be at the forefront of many news headlines. It is a troubling topic and one that many would never consider to be a part of their world. However, it is one, that as an association, we urge our members and the equine community to be aware of and to educate themselves about.

A great resource for equestrians is the USEF Safe Sport Policy that talks about the different types of misconducts, how to report it and how individuals can train and educate themselves about abuse.  Furthermore, SafeSport is an independent non-profit organization whose mission it is "to make athlete well-being the centerpiece of our nation's sports culture". SafeSport was established as a safe place for athletes to learn the signs of misconduct and to report abuse while bringing light to what has been happening in the sport industry. Earlier this year through the support and hard work of SafeSport, President Trump signed bill S.534, the " Protecting Young Athletes from Sexual Abuse and SafeSport Authorization Act"  which provided "important new standards and protections for athletes", which is a first of its kind. This bill was a tremendous step in the right direction to help bring awareness and aid in ridding any sport industry of abuse. To learn more about SafeSport, visit www.safesport.org or call 720.531.0340.

"It highly behooves each and every one of us to understand what constitutes misconduct and abuse to ensure that we don't place ourselves in a questionable position or place others in those positions." said Glenn Petty, Executive Vice President of the Arabian Horse Association (AHA). "Furthermore, we strongly encourage that everyone take the free online training that SafeSport has available to guarantee that they are well-versed on this subject matter."

AHA members can do the free online training in two easy steps. First step, if you don't already have a current US Equestrian membership, sign up for a free US Equestrian Fan Membership at https://members.usef.org/join-renew/fan-application and use promo code AHA18. Make sure to write down the membership ID number from US Equestrian to use later for the SafeSport Training sign in. Second step, go to https://safesport.org/authentication/register?token=92e6afd1-c848-4e8b-a844-3c559383f49e  for the SafeSport Training. Here you will use the US Equestrian membership ID number to sign in and create a password. A confirmation email will be sent to the email address used to sign up for SafeSport. Once you have confirmed your email address, you can sign in and complete the SafeSport Training online.

We highly suggest that individuals inform themselves about the topic of abuse to help ensure the safety of all and to aid in bringing higher standards to the equestrian industry. We as an association will continue to strive and to push for continued education and measures from our lawmakers to create an atmosphere where all can feel safe and to enjoy the industry we all love.

Many people have had questions about the Region XI show this coming July and whether it will be able to take place on the Illinois State Fairgrounds due to prospective construction. Dave Waggoner our show manager, has been in contact with the people at the fairgrounds and has learned the following:

Barn 13 (the main warm up arena) which is used by most to go directly into the show arena from the practice area is having the roof replaced and the project is well under way. There is a completion date of June 1, 2018, that they are quite confident will be met (Rumor is there is a significant penalty clause in the contract if it is delayed after that date).

The engineering firm for the coliseum renovation is onsite doing studies on all components of the structure so that a detailed plan can be made for approval. This phase, according to the grounds people will take at least a few months before completion. Then there is the bid-letting which will also take a significant amount of time. Of course, they would like it to be ready by 2019 for the State Fair in August, however, with the studies and lead time to actual construction a much later date is anticipated.

While it is unfortunate that the Coliseum was allowed to deteriorate to this condition the shows that have used the current facilities have praised the work that has been done to provide a safe place to hold all classes so that the horse shows may continue. So please come see us at Region XI this year as we plan to have a great show in 2018!!!

Rhode Island AHA

News from: The Empire State Arabian Horse Association (ESAHA) Region 16

The 2018 Empire Spring Show was a GREAT success! AMAZING judges teamed up with exhibitors, horses, the show staff, sponsors, Empire board members and family members and volunteers to make it happen.   We had two brand new events, a yummy Friday night Wine, Cheeses and Chocolate buffet that was a big hit, and glittering Arabian horse gala on Saturday Night we called "An Arabian Night."

"An Arabian Night" was widely advertised, free to the public, and delivered on its promise of a spectacular hour-long display of our incredible Arabian horses, their unique history, and the many disciplines at which they excel.

The audience saw them in Halter, Endurance, Sport Horse, Side Saddle, Reining, a Musical Freestyle Dressage or Kur, Green Horse over Fences, Western Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, Show Hack, Native Costume and a Stallion Presentation. Our National Champions wore their rose garlands!

We had many opportunities to meet and greet, along with opportunities to take photos with an Arabian dressed as a unicorn. Ann Judge, who rides and trains the Denver Bronco's Mascot Thunder, was a judge at the show, and was also available for autographs and even let some lucky visitors try on her Super Bowl ring!

This was our first attempt to reach out in a big way to the general public to share our love for the amazing Arabian horse. We felt it worked!   We drew a good crowd! People told us they had driven two and three hours to attend. We learned a lot, and things will only get better! It truly takes a village!

We also held an online Charity Stallion Breeding Auction to raise funds for Envision. Our stallion lineup was second to none! We raised more than $9,300 with the help of the Envision crew and the generous stallion owners.

A special thanks goes to Lara Ames and Deb Trebesch for all their dedicated time, services, and for providing handouts of the Envision Magazine! A shout out to Mary Trowbridge for her support and for suggesting we contact Envision and Lara Ames!

A very special thank you also goes to Michelle Bartlett, AHA Marketing Coordinator, for providing hand-out material from AHA. Michelle went above and beyond to make sure the material was in our hands before the "An Arabian Night" event on Saturday night!

Thank you to one and all!
