I am extremely proud to share with you just how amazing our R9 youth really are. The Arabian horse industry should always be a place that both teaches and nurtures sportsmanship, compassion, leadership, humanity, and philanthropy. This group of R9 youth are the epitome of it all. Please read about how this group of young people made others' lives better in the wake of a tragedy.
The kids decided to raise money to
benefit The North Valley Animal Disaster Group in Chico, Calif. The girls really wanted to do something to help with the California fires and the displaced horses and other animals. With the leadership of Jennifer Goslin and Crizta Goslin, they set a goal and got to work!
Suzanne Crull, Kenzie Roath (and brother Connor), Genna Bumgardner, Kennedy Morgan and Andie George all baked cookies, brownies, and horse treats. They agreed they would sell these two for a $1.00 and set a goal to raise $500.
They were allowed to put a few tables together at the entrance to the show arena at the Glenrose Shoot Out and all took turns selling items. When the girls were showing, Kenzie's little brother Connor spent the majority of the show working hard for sales! Not only did they reach their monetary goal, but they surpassed it and raised $700.
Norm at NVADG was very appreciative that they organized this event and especially thankful they chose them as the recipient. At the time of the donation (December 1, 2018) they had 1,600 animals in shelters, and they were still going behind fire lines looking for lost or injured animals. This money will help them tremendously! Norm left a voicemail for the girls that said, " Hi Kim (Kennedy's mom). My name is Norm, and I was at the NVADG group in Chico, Calif., and I wanted to thank Kennedy, McKenzie, and Suzanne for all of their hard work and raising money for the fire victims. It's really going to help us. I want them to know that we appreciate it and please thank them from all of us in California... and thank you Kim for raising such great kids. Bye."
Each of the kids were asked this question: What was your favorite part about participating in this philanthropic event? And here are their answers!
Suzanne Crull: "I was happy to participate in the fundraiser knowing it was going to help horses that needed it. Knowing it was going to a good cause is important to me was my favorite part of fundraising."
Kenzie Roath: "I would have to say my favorite part about participating in the wildfire charity was the fact that 100% of the proceeds we collected went to the horses in need of feed and shelter. It made me feel happy that I was able to help someone else through the charity."
Connor Roath: "My favorite part was selling cookie and brownies to others to raise money to help horses that were sick or in trouble. We had a lot of fun."
Genna Bumgardner: "My favorite part about doing the fundraiser was being able to do it with my friends and knowing that we are helping horses that are suffering."
Kennedy Morgan: "My favorite part was coming together and raising money for horses and other animals that were displaced, starved and unloved."
Andie George: "My favorite part was knowing horses were going to be saved."
A note from the R9 Youth Coordinators Mrs. Debbie and Mrs. Annalise:
"We are so incredibly proud of you kids! Ya'll have big hearts and please know that your kindness and compassion for animals will never go unnoticed.Keep up the good work."

A Different Kind of Horsepower
If rain, cold and mud are hindering your winter horse plans, USEF vehicle sponsor, Land Rover, has a suggestion for a way to enjoy horsepower of a slightly different kind this season-the Land Rover Driving Experience!
Board members of the Western Carolinas Arabian Horse Association (WCAHA) recently took advantage of a chance to try the off-road experience before their January planning session. Participants took to the trails, traveling over ditches and obstacles, through mud and ruts, and tilting at impressive angles uphill, downhill, and sideways. A few snow flurries just added to the ambiance and to the appreciation of heated seats and steering wheels.
Throughout their adventure time, drivers were coached by a certified instructor who shared lots of important information about angles of travel, throttle and speed management, and numerous other driving tips and techniques.
"It was really exciting to participate in the Land Rover Experience," states WCAHA President, Robert Obermiller. "The instructor, Aaron, was engaging and knowledgeable, and the Range Rover's technology was incredible."
In its 8th year as the vehicle sponsor for the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), Land Rover encourages horse owners and riders to come and enjoy the off-road driving experience at any one of the three US destinations. USEF members are eligible for a 10% discount on all activities, and Region 12 AHA members are fortunate enough to have one of the driving schools within their region-the Land Rover Experience at The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.
"It's really fun to talk with horse people about off-road driving skills, because the languages are so similar," says Heather Brannan, a member of WCAHA and USEF and a staff member at Land Rover Experience Biltmore. "It's easy to explain line selection and clearance to a jumper, suspension to a dressage rider, and anti-lock brake systems to a reiner!"
Aaron Owens, Lead Instructor at Biltmore, states that equestrians frequently come into the off-road driving experience with another advantage. "Horse people tend to have a better awareness of driving the entire vehicle through a course," he says. "Probably because they frequently tow trailers, they are generally better at remembering to not cut corners too sharply and to be sure that the rear part of the vehicle travels through just as cleanly and safely as the front."
To test your own skills and learn more about the techniques and technology of off-road driving, contact Land Rover Experience Biltmore at 828.225.1541 or https://experience.landroverusa.com/. Adventures are available for individuals and for social or corporate groups. Be sure to tell them you are a USEF member and get ready to enjoy the most advanced technology and fun available in non-horse horsepower!

Mare managers, Chelsea Quinlivan and Jerrika Crawford, introduced the youth to the broodmares and last year's foals.
Along with a full tour of the facility, the learning day included conversation about mare nutrition, leg and hoof care, basic training, the all-important ground manners program and much more.

Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada hosts AGM!
Over 50 members attended the club's annual meeting and awards banquet on January 12
. Although the temperatures were cool, it did not hamper everyone's spirits. The meeting was well conducted and organized by our long-time co-ordinator, Alice Draper, and President Allan Ehrlick kept the conversation going on a variety of topics, mainly the re-introduction of the club show (tentatively scheduled for June 15
in Mt. Forest), possible changes to the AGM format and Region 18/AHA topics.
The banquet buffet was superb as always at the Brant Park Inn in Brantford. This hotel has hosted our club for many years and the members are very comfortable with its location and amenities. Fundraising is always forefront at the AGM, and our silent auction did not disappoint. There was such a variety of items, and many sparked a "friendly bidding war" amongst members! Highlights of the evening included the high point awards presentations, Hall of Fame inductees CCF Integriti+++// and Imarango Meriah +//, AHAEC/Region 18 Volunteer Service Awards to Allan and Cheryl Ehrlick, Jill Barton and Jane Whitwell, plus the AHA Volunteer Service Awards Regional Level to Michelle Harbridge and Josh Schildroth. Congratulations one and all!
