LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

This has been a very busy and exciting start to the new Hockey Season.

Our annual meeting was June 1st. It was very well attended. We greeted old faces and many new ones.  The affiliates elected a new Board member, Topher Scott. He brings a wealth of experience and youth to our Board. Welcome!

Several of us attended the USA Hockey Annual Congress in Denver, Colorado June 5th through the 8th. The Congress was a huge success, and we were met there by our Blackhawks Partners.

Our relationship with USA and the Hawks has never been better and we are looking forward to working with them to provide you with a great 24-25 hockey season experience.

Kudos to Julie Rancourt who received the Volunteer of the Year award from USA Hockey. On a sad but happy note, we were joined by the family of Jim Clare who received the prestigious Walter Yaciuk Award posthumously. He is missed by us and our friends at USA Hockey. He was responsible for educating over 10,000 coaches for USA Hockey.

I would like to thank all of our board members who gave up 3 1/2 days from work and family to represent you here. It amazes me how they give of themselves so unselfishly.

I hope you all have a great summer. Before you know it we will be back on the ice.

Thank you for your support,

Kevin Bolger

President

Hoisting The Walter Cup: Kendall Coyne Schofield Gets First Honor

Minnesota Captures Inaugural PWHL Championship

By: Ross Forman

Things looked bleak for Minnesota as it ended the regular season on a five-game losing streak, then were shutout in their first two Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) playoff games.

“A lot of people counted us out,” during the seven-game losing streak, said Kendall Coyne Schofield, the left-handed shooting forward for Minnesota who has served as Team USA’s captain since 2019 and represented the United States in each of the last three Olympic Games.

“But we never counted ourselves out. We knew we could make it to the end and win The Walter Cup.”

And that they did. On Wednesday, May 29, Minnesota defeated Boston 3-0 in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,309 at the Tsongas Center at Lowell, Mass., in Game 5 of the PWHL Finals, presented by Scotiabank, to claim The Walter Cup. READ MORE<<<

Cam Abbott Named Head Coach of The Chicago Wolves

By: Ross Forman

Cam Abbott brings international coaching experience to the Chicago Wolves, as the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League announced June 20th that the 40-year-old Abbott has been named head coach of the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves.

Abbott is the 14th head coach in Wolves history since its founding in 1994.

The Wolves, coming off 23-35-14 record last season, became the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate May 2 when the clubs inked a three-year agreement. The Wolves finished last in the seven-team Central Division last season.

Abbott was the head coach of Rogle BK in the Swedish Hockey League from 2017-23. He was named the 2021-22 SHL Coach of the Year after Rogle BK topped the SHL regular-season standings and captured the Champions Hockey League for the first time. Prior to coaching Rogle BK, Abbott served as head coach of Vaxjo Lakers’ Under-20 team from 2016-17.

“It just felt right,” Abbott said. “I’m exceptionally excited to work under Rob Brind’Amour and work with the Carolina Hurricanes organization, and at the same time coach in an organization like the Chicago Wolves with its history and commitment to being a great club on the ice and the impact they have had on the community, how they’ve had a massive presence in the Rosemont area.

“It has me smiling every time I see someone from Carolina calling and talking about this opportunity. I’m really thrilled, excited and honored to have this opportunity.”

New AHAI High School Committee Chairperson Glenn Jauch Talks Pucks & More

By: Ross Forman

Glenn Jauch, the former president of the IHSHL West Division, has been named the new chairperson for the AHAI High School Committee, starting with the 2024-25 season. He replaces Jack Weinberg and Matt Hallam has been named the new president of Illinois West.

“I’m really looking forward to stepping into the role,” Jauch said. “It’s obviously different from being the president of one league, but I have a good feel for everything that goes on and have the time and the desire to do it – and that’s desperately needed in this role.”

As the chairperson, Jauch is the conduit between all the Illinois high school hockey leagues and AHAI, and he is a member of the AHAI board of directors. He was on the Illinois West board of directors for the past 11 years and the past four seasons as its president. He said the Illinois West experience certainly helped him work with and understand pure and combined division teams, especially since West is loaded with combined division teams, including 2024 combined division state champion Waubonsie/Metea. Neck Laceration Protection

USA Hockey approved legislation requiring the use of neck laceration protection for players in all age classifications, other than adults, in games and practices, as well as for on-ice officials under the age of 18, effective August 1, 2024. For clarity, the requirement includes players in the youth, girls, and junior age classifications. (Arm bands, head bands, plain turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks are not neck laceration protectors.)

USA Hockey has long recommended the use of cut-resistant socks, sleeves or undergarments. USA Hockey strongly recommends the use of neck laceration protection by adult players.

2024-25 Season Coaching Update

The Central District Coach-in-Chief announced that there will be NO CEP waiver / Temp cards given this 2024/25 season. All Coaches must complete the USAH certification as outlined on the USAH website here.

Ask the Official

By Dave Zednik

QUESTION: May a goalkeeper be designated as a Captain or Alternate Captain?

ANSWER: Yes. However, the goalkeeper cannot exercise the privileges

of the Captain during the game as outlined in this rule.

Rule Reference 202(a). There is no rule preventing a goalkeeper from being named a Captain or Alternate Captain as an honor by the team to show leadership. However, that goalkeeper may not exercise Captain’s privileges during a game. Doing so would unnecessarily delay the game if the goalkeeper were allowed to leave the goal area for any discussion and then go to the bench area to relay any message and finally back to the goal area and be prepared for the resumption of play.
