LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

I hope your spring is going well. It’s usually more relaxed and less demanding. When spring is over, take some time away from hockey. Play other sports, get sunshine and fresh air. You’ll be surprised how much it will help when fall comes around.

We are excited about our Annual Leadership Conference coming up on June 3rd. The presidents and hockey directors will attend the program to help plan a great 2023-24 season.

The week following the Annual Meeting we will be in Denver for the USA Hockey Annual Congress. Many of our board members are on USA Hockey committees and will participate in their breakout sessions. We are fighting for our Illinois' clubs to make your experience better every year.

Officiating Talk With The Lone Milz Family Member – Mom – Who Doesn’t Even Skate

Jana Milz Treks To Games For Her Sons, Daughter & Husband – All Of Whom Officiate

By: Ross Forman

Jana Milz had quite a memorable season, driving from the family’s Lake Forest home with her 17-year-old son Landon so he could officiate noteworthy games.

They made the trek to Southwest Ice Arena in Crestwood for Landon’s first game in a four-official system. They drove to Seven Bridges in Woodridge as Landon was working boys’ and girls’ AAA games. They traveled to Joliet for his NIHL Championship assignment and to Mount Prospect for the AAA state playoffs. READ MORE<<<

Third Coach Wood Set To Lead Stevenson Varsity Hockey

Dan Wood named Patriots’ new head coach, following his brother and dad who formerly held the title.

By: Ross Forman

There’s a new name as the head coach of Stevenson High School.

Well, sort of.

Dan Wood, 33, who lives in Milwaukee, begins his first season as the Patriots’ head coach in the fall, which will be his first time as a high school varsity head coach. But Dan is following the skates of his older brother, Tom, and dad, Jim, who formerly served as the Stevenson varsity head coach.

Dan enters his 11th season coaching Stevenson in the fall, his alma mater where he has held numerous coaching roles, including JV assistant coach (2 seasons), JV White co-head coach (1 season) and varsity assistant coach (8 seasons). During Dan’s run on the Stevenson bench, the Patriots won the school’s first and only varsity state championship (2021-2022), were runners-up in the Varsity USA Hockey Nationals (2021-2022), were varsity state runner-up (2017-2018), and three-time participants in the state tournament final four. Plus, Dan was a Stevenson coach for the 2013 JV state championship and more.

Dan also is the head coach and hockey director at DePaul University. He has been with the DePaul program since 2020. Since taking over the program, he's led DePaul from a consistent 27th-35th ranked team in the region to being ranked 5th in the region last season and 12th in the nation.

He will coach Stevenson and DePaul in the 2023-24 season.

And he has the same goals that both past Coach Wood carried: “We always (want) to go to the United Center and compete for a state championship,” he said. “To do that, we need to grow and develop a lot of new players who are coming to the team this year.” READ MORE<<<

Ask the Official

By Dave Zednik

QUESTION: In a 3 referee game the referees don't see a possible head contact penalty and play continues. The offending team scores a goal, at the stoppage of play the linesman gives his account of what happened. The referees then asses to the offending player a 5 mins and Game Misconduct, is the goal allowed or disallowed.

ANSWER: Casebook Situation #7 under Rule 502 in the USA Hockey Playing Rules states:

“A Linesman has determined that a major penalty infraction has occurred unseen by the Referee and is waiting for the next stoppage of play to report to the Referee. The next stoppage of play occurs when the offending team scores a goal, whereupon the Linesman reports his version of the infraction. The Referee concurs that a major penalty should be assessed. What procedures does the Referee follow?

Disallow the goal and assess the penalty. Rule References 502(c) and 503(e).

Linesmen cannot stop play, but must wait for the first stoppage of play to report their version of the incident to the Referee.”

Foot and Ankle Injuries

By: Caitlin A. Nicholson, MD, Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician

Injuries to the foot and ankle are common in hockey players. They can be minor such as contusions (bruises) or severe, like some types of fractures (broken bones) that require surgery.

Ankle sprains are a common injury in sports. The more common type of ankle sprain (low or lateral ankle sprain) is a stretch or tear of the lateral ligaments. The stiffness and support of skates make this less common in hockey players. Instead, hockey players more often get high ankle (syndesmotic) sprains after a twisting injury. The athlete may have pain, swelling, bruising, and trouble walking. These are treated with crutches or a walking boot, time off from hockey, and physical therapy. Athletes are often out of hockey for at least 6 weeks with a high ankle sprain. READ MORE<<<
