In The Spotlight: Meet our current Omaha AHEC Scholars

Congratulations to our AHEC Scholars... for completing Year 1 of the program!  AHEC Scholars Program The Nebraska AHEC Scholars Program is part of a national initiative that prepares health profession students who want to serve in rural or urban underserved areas Healthcare professions students who complete the AHEC Scholars Program gain lifetime connections with health professionals in a variety of disciplines. Access to real world experience beyond the classroom will increase self-confidence and give students a competitive edge when seeking employment. Becoming an AHEC Scholar will elevate students' credentials as an emerging health care leader. AHEC Scholars gain access to exclusive workshops, potential employers, community leaders, and national and state resources on the latest health topics. The program is offered at no cost to the student. AHEC Scholars may be eligible for a stipend. Source: UNMC-Nebraska AHEC Scholars Program Scholars Activities AHEC Scholars attend workshops which offer valuable insight to different healthcare experiences. In fall of 2020, the Omaha AHEC collaborated with OneWorld Community Health Center. The objective of this workshop was to gain awareness of OneWorld as a federally qualified health center and the role they play in meeting the needs of underserved communities, to show the roles of various health care providers at OneWorld and to describe the importance of team dynamics as they relate to providing patient-centered care, and to understand how OneWorld implements behavioral health integration, and how these practices relate to the quality and safety of care.  In spring of 2021, the Omaha AHEC hosted a workshop featuring the Refugee Empowerment Center. Alana Schriver discussed refugee resettlement, and panelists talked about refugee health from a personal standpoint.

2021 High School Alliance Field Trip

The High School Alliance Program "is a health sciences enrichment program that partners with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and public school districts in the greater Omaha area. The program provides high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to observe, shadow and work alongside health care professionals and researchers at UNMC." On Tuesday, May 25th, 2021, the Omaha AHEC hosted a field trip for the High School Alliance program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Students were able to move from station to station to for fun hands-on activities. These included the microscope station, pipette art, dissection station, and medical humanities poetry.

The microscope station allowed students to view and identify different types of tissues. Essential to science experiments, pipettes can also be used to create art. Students were able to pick different templates to create art with their pipettes. The dissection station gave students the opportunity to observe dissected organs and practice identifying tissues. For the medical humanities station, students wrote a short piece based on an experience led by Omaha AHEC team members.

Shadowing Guide for pre-health students

Omaha AHEC knows that finding health related job shadowing opportunities can be difficult so we curated a short guide called “Job Shadowing 101” to help. Within this handbook we outline common rules and expectations one should foresee, a list of locations that offer programs and opportunities to the general public, and a list of helpful tips to help make the most out of your shadowing experiences. We hope that this resource can help job showing feel less daunting and make process easier to those in need! You can find our shadowing guide on the Omaha AHEC webpage under Student Opportunities.

MUNA BOX Project Volunteering

The MUNA Box Project is a student led organization that works closely with refugee and immigrant institutions, religious institutions, and community centers in the Omaha and Lincoln areas to provide nutritional and hygiene support to those in need. We are currently looking for more volunteers to help with product collection, donation unloading and packaging, and care package distribution.
