From Resident to Community Manager

Samantha "Mink" King has been managing Roosevelt Gardens since May of 2023, and she does not take her role lightly. She knows what it's like to be on the resident side of things since that's where she started.

Reflecting upon those days, she said, "I was a resident at Roosevelt Gardens after a separation. I asked Ms. Penny was she hiring and she encouraged me to obtain my licensure, get some more experience, and apply. I did what she said and now I am a part of the Atlantic Housing Family."

Penny manages another apartment community, and at the time she was temporarily filling in as the Roosevelt Gardens

Community Manager. Mink said, "The experience has been nothing short of amazing when I was given the opportunity to display the same grace and concern that I received from Ms. Penny Stone while I was a resident." Mink sees her job as more than just taking care of a property. She wants to give hope and "help families see the bigger picture and achieve their goals."

The Roosevelt Gardens team establishes real relationships with the residents so they feel comfortable with expressing their needs, fears, concerns, obstacles and accomplishments. Assistant Manager Rose Islar said, "Mink King is a great manager, very outstanding and supportive to her team, tenants and the Roosevelt Gardens community. Mink has made a great turn around with the property since she was here." Leasing and Community Engagement Associate Yolanda Buchanan tells a similar story: " I love working with her and she has really made a difference since coming to the property. She cares deeply for her staff and the residents."

Mink's tip for being an effective community manager is to simply listen. "I build the community strategically by the voice of our residents. I am a strong believer in the proven fact that if someone feels appreciated, that person will return the same gratitude to you...There is never a day that some tenant will not just stop by to say hello. Even the children are practicing accountability by eliminating the amount of trash on site daily. It’s all working for the good!"

Atlantic Housing Community Connections

Residents at Stone Creek came together to plant flowers and vegetables in a community garden and host a community-wide yard sale.

Villas at Sonterra residents enjoyed DIY potted plant projects for Earth Day.

Atlantic Housing corporate employees used their volunteer time off to serve together at CitySquare. This nonprofit organization offers social services to address poverty through four key areas: hunger, health, housing, and hope. They have a food pantry where people can come in and shop for free. Our volunteer team helped out by greeting shoppers at the door, answering questions, bagging up items, and helping to load their cars.
