AHFA Mourns Death of Board Member Peter M. Weiss

AHFA Board member, architect, and educator Peter M. Weiss passed away November 25.

Weiss served on AHFA’s board of directors for nearly five years. His wise counsel and enthusiasm for architecture, building sciences, and historic preservation will be missed. Prior to his term as a board member, Weiss assisted in crafting the design quality standards to which all AHFA-financed affordable housing developments must adhere.

A native of Iowa, Weiss become a professor in the College of Architecture, Department of Building Science, at Auburn University in 1983. He taught classes in structural design from then until his retirement in 2016. Weiss had a special interest in historic preservation and involved his students in preservation projects across Auburn, Opelika, and Tuskegee. He counted among his architectural design accomplishments the campus of SIAS University near Zhengzhou, China, and the Veterans Memorial Monument in Opelika.

The Board and staff of AHFA extend sincere sympathies to the family of Peter Weiss and express gratitude for his faithful service and valuable friendship.

Denise Weaver of DHI Mortgage in Birmingham Named AHFA's Leading Lender for FY19
Each quarter, we recognize the top loan officers who are closing the most deals using AHFA homeownership programs: Step Up, Affordable Income Subsidy Grant, and Mortgage Credit Certificates.

We are pleased to announce the FY19 Leading Lender is… Denise Weaver with DHI Mortgage! Congratulations, Denise! Thank you for promoting our programs and using them to make buying a home more affordable for your customers.
As our Leading Lender for FY19, we feel it’s only fitting to have Denise as the subject of our latest Lender Stoplight.

Denise has been in the mortgage business for 20 years, the last seven of which have been with DHI Mortgage. Over the years she has received many awards and special recognitions, including earning the highest achievement at DHI for the past four years – the President’s Club, which recognizes the top two percent of originators. In addition, Denise has received the Platinum Award for closings of new homes for the past four years with the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders, an Affiliate of the Year award from the Montgomery Chapter of the Women’s Council of Realtors, and many top producer awards over the course of her career.

Q: How long have you worked with AHFA’s homeownership programs?
A: I heard about the programs at a previous employer and have been using them to help homeowners since 2004.

Q: What do you think is the greatest benefit of AHFA programs for customers?
A: The greatest benefit of this program is the low to no down payment that allows a buyer to be able to purchase. The different products are also great because not all customers fit into each program.

Q: What do you like most about AHFA’s programs?
A: I like working with Step Up loans as I know the program guidelines, and Lender Online makes the process easy from the beginning to the end of the loan. The communication you get with the compliance team at AHFA when you have a question or concern is priceless. I also love the fact that the loan will be serviced by ServiSolutions, and I always let my borrowers know this information.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about your job?
A: I find it rewarding helping my buyers get their dream home. Whether they are a seasoned buyer, first-time homebuyer, or even someone that has credit challenges – they are why I do this job. I love watching the buyers get their keys as the joy I feel is priceless. This is what the career is all about – helping someone purchase their biggest investment and becoming a part of their family.

Q: Anything else you’d like to say?
A: I would like to thank my team at DHI Mortgage, especially my manager Jason Reid. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Success Story: Cottage Hill Place, Mobile

AHFA recently met with Brent Parker, a Navy veteran and resident of Cottage Hill Place in Mobile. The newly constructed, 80-unit affordable housing development was financed in part by $912,116 in Housing Credits administered by AHFA.

Mobile native Parker said, "After I received honorable discharge, I moved back home to pursue a degree in computer network administration. I enjoy cooking, designing, and motivating the youth. I am the caretaker for two of my nephews. I strive everyday to make sure that they are equipped and ready to be young adults in this world."

Living in Cottage Hill enables Parker to care for his nephews while he deals with some health issues and works to reenter the job market. He said, "The community is a nice, clean, and friendly environment. The staff is phenomenal. Maintenance is always prepared to render services in a timely manner. Also, the community office manager is respectful and willing to assist in any situation surrounding the Cottage Hill Place community.
