Issue 5

Mentoring One Another

In this issue, I've highlighted exceptional women who have played a role in the success of AHN and as role models for our young students. I hope you will be as inspired as I am to continue celebrating our AHN family!

During the month of November, I will highlight our alumnae who are veterans and business owners, so please email me if you are one. I will also feature alumnae's recipes and tips to gather with those we are most grateful to be with at Thanksgiving time. If you would like to share your recipe, tips, and even a short video, please email them to me by November 4.

I was honored to work with our 2024 Career Day Chair and alumna Courtney Astemborski '10, Principal Mrs. Taranto, Dean of Students Ms. Witherspoon, Ms. Schwartz, Ms. Leonard, Mr. Wilson, our esteemed faculty and staff, our Institutional Advancement team Mrs. Vivian P'14 '17, Mrs. Wilson P'28, Mrs. McGarry P'29, Mr. Perritano and Ms. Hannafin '19, and our panelists who are alumnae and parents of our community. Everyone played such an integral role in making our Career Day possible for our students.

We provided an opportunity for students to explore various careers by listening to our panelists and asking them questions. Any career choice doesn’t create a straight path to success. It requires you to consider your talents, what inspires you, and how you can contribute to your community, what you want to study in college and taking advantage of internships, job shadowing, and finding a mentor that believes in you. Ultimately it is important to listen to your heart so you create your legacy. This school plays an integral role to our student's future success and our students play a role in the history of this school where future generations of students will look to them for inspiration and guidance. They are our legacy.

I enjoyed connecting with our alumnae in NY, so many asked us what they could do to drive the success of our school. They have become mentors to me, I look to all of our alumnae for their support of my role, without them I cannot work toward our goals set forth in our strategic plan.

Throughout this year, you will hear from me as I engage in conversation with our alumnae seeking opportunities. We can all donate our time, talents and treasure and be together. I look forward to hearing from you, and you can reach me at kamcdermott@ahns.org.

God Bless!

Thank you to our Guest Panelists and Career Day Chair

We had more than three dozen alumnae and parents attend, in fields ranging from healthcare and education to technology and the arts, to meet in three panel sessions with our high school students.

Students moderated each panel session, providing them an opportunity to utilize the skills they are learning in their communications class with this leadership position for the day.

Our seniors were invited to their first network and gathering event, a luncheon with our panelists. By concluding our day with this special event, our panelists were able to share the importance of this type of networking session that will perpetuate our senior's success in college and their careers.

We want to thank our keynote speaker, Dr. Mary Edwards P '26 (mother of Molly) for sharing her incredible journey. Here are some key takeaways from her address:

  • Career decisions Seem HUGE. Make them smaller.
  • You only can decide things based on what you know right now.
  • Know yourself, what's important to you.
  • Don't be afraid to try new things.
  • New directions bring new opportunities.
  • Don't be afraid to change your mind. YOU will change.
  • There is a difference between changing directions and giving up.
  • Regret is a waste of energy—don't do it.
  • The most important thing is never going to be the job, it will be the people.

We also want to thank our 2024 Career Day Chair Courtney Astemborski '10, who worked with our Institutional Advancement team, Principal Margaret Taranto, and Dean of Students Kathy Witherspoon to organize this special day. Courtney also made her PantherVision debut alongside Student Council President Morgan Brewer.
