Happy New Year to the residents of Asylum Hill and to everyone reading this. The Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association is looking forward to a very busy, active and successful 2019. AHNA is growing and getting stronger. With the funding for new staff, newly-elected Board members and leadership, we will be prepared to tackle some of the toughest issues confronting our residents and businesses.

The 2019 legislative session gavels in on Wednesday January 9. I am proud and humbled to serve my second term as the Majority Leader in the House of Representatives.

Every legislative session we review and debate hundreds of bills and policies. I've outlined just a few that are already getting media attention - the "hot issues" that people may be talking about.

There are a lot of things happening at the 224 EcoSpace on Farmington Ave. Over the next few months we'll look into some of them. This month we'd like to look back at one particular Holiday themed event, the Small Business Night Out on December 14 ^th.

Volunteer of the Month

Volunteer Of The Month - Santa

This year we've decided to recognize Santa as our Volunteer of the Month. Not only does he bring gifts and joy to children the world over, but he also inspires that same spirit in most of us. This year he decided to stop by Sigourney Square Park on December 12

^th, to make sure all of the Asylum Hill children young and old were in the proper mood for the holiday to come. AHNA, in partnership with Youth Challenge, Hartford Fire Department and NINA caught his spirit and made the necessary preparations that included lots of candy canes for everyone, an exciting entrance into the park on the very red HFD fire truck and lots of spirited Christmas songs.

Georges No Longer Needs a Kidney Part 2

Two months after receiving his kidney transplant, Georges Annan Kingsley was back at Hartford Hospital for a different purpose. He still goes there weekly to be sure that everything is working well with his new kidney, but this time his purpose was to give rather than to receive. And Georges' gift was the one thing he does best, his art.

Arts and Music on the Hill

A Civil War Christmas

Scenes from Paula Vogel's A Civil War Christmas were performed on Saturday December 15 ^th at the Charter Oak Cultural Center. They had been rehearsing afternoons twice a week for two months at Grace Lutheran Church. The production began when the actor Forrest McClendon, a Connecticut native, and UCONN alum was already doing the musical at UCONN's Connecticut Repertory Theater.

Winter Choral Concert At Trinity Episcopal Church

On Friday, December 14 ^th , the West Hartford Women's Chorale gave a seasonal concert at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asylum Hill. The church provides a spacious venue for the sound of voices to unify, then expand to fill every niche of the Sanctuary and beyond. We are fortunate in Asylum Hill to have many churches built at a time when design was large and elegant, and materials were more affordable. The result inspires awe as we enter these spaces today.
