It is with great pleasure that I announce the election of officers for the Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association.

From the AHNA Chair
I am very excited about being the new Chair of AHNA. I live at Artspace Hartford, which is an Artist Community. I have been there since it opened over 20 years ago. I love Asylum Hill with its two magnificent avenues, Farmington and Asylum and its large number of restored old Victorian homes.
It's a neighborhood with three major corporations, the Aetna, Hartford Insurance Company and St. Francis Hospital that began in Hartford in the 1800's and still maintain their headquarters here. We also have the Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe historic houses, and Hartford High School, the second oldest high school in the country.

Early Voting
As the legislative session began, I was proud to stand with Secretary of the State Merrill, Sen President Looney, Sen. Majority Leader Duff, fellow legislators and advocates to announce a Constitutional Amendment to allow Connecticut voters to vote early, just as voters are allowed to do in at least 37 other states in our country.

Volunteer of the Month

Volunteer Of The Month - Lynn Johnson
Like many who give freely of their time and effort, Lynn Johnson likes to focus on something that can make the world a better place, has a lasting impact and where her own skills, in collaboration with others are well suited. She did this ten years ago when she got a group of volunteers together to plant six trees in the Northeast neighborhood of Hartford.
Since then, she had wanted to plant more trees and to plant them in her own neighborhood of Asylum Hill. The idea, as trees do, grew slowly.

Wheeler Clinic One Year On
It was just over a year ago that Wheeler Clinic opened their new facility at 43 Woodland St. and we wrote about it in the News & Views. In that time they have added 6 Community Health Workers (CHW), as well as a Community Health Coordinator.
Their purpose is to bring an integrated approach to health care where the patient is the center of their own medical care.

Apartment Parking on Asylum Hill
Parking for renters in Asylum Hill has long been a problem, and AHNA has made efforts at various times to try to alleviate it as much as possible. Several years ago we piloted a program with the Hartford Parking Authority to institute the Residential Parking Permit Program. This allows renters to purchase a special permit on certain designated streets to park during certain hours, and prevent those who have other options from taking those spaces. It was definitely a step in the right direction, but it's not a solution to the whole problem.

Come join us for an evening of testimonials, art exhibit, jazz ensemble for your listening pleasure and celebration of the gift of life.

Arts and Music on the Hill
|
2018-19 Music on the Hill Concerts
Music for Humanity Concerts join the music and outreach ministries of Asylum Hill Congregational Church. This endowed music series presents community concerts in AHCC's historic sanctuary. Since presentation costs are covered by this fund, all proceeds from ticket sales are directed to Hartford area service agencies and community programs supported by the church. Tickets: $20 per concert.
March 23, 8pm - Jazz Samaritan Alliance - A collective of composer/performers who have united to create and present original, socially conscious jazz, charter members Kris Allen (alto saxophone), Noah Baerman (piano), and Chris Dingman (vibraphone) will be joined by other accomplished performers for a program of pieces composed for the occasion that addresses the topic of health care. This event is produced in conjunction with Resonant Motion, Inc. and the Inner Arts Initiative.

The Jazz Samaritan Alliance is a collective founded by Jimmy Greene (tenor and soprano saxophones), Kris Allen (alto saxophone), Chris Dingman (vibraphone), Noah Baerman (piano and organ) and Johnathan Blake (drums).
These established composer/educator/performers came together with the purpose of creating and presenting socially conscious original jazz. They appear together on Baerman's Ripples album and in the fall of 2014 presented their first all-new program, a series of compositions addressing the subject of hunger and food justice. Other collaborators to join the Jazz Samaritans have included saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, bassists Linda Oh and Ike Sturm and drummers Rudy Royston and Otis Brown, III.
