AI Imagery: When to Use It… and When Not To
In our last topic, we discussed protecting your brand when using AI-generated images including creative rights and Content Credentials.
Today, we’re focusing on something just as important: when AI imagery makes sense… and when it doesn’t. Generative AI is a powerful creative tool. It’s fast, flexible, and great for exploring ideas. But not every project is a good fit, especially when long-term branding or print production is involved.
Here are a few practical guidelines:
When AI Works Well
-
Concept development
Ideal for brainstorming, mood boards, and early-stage exploration.
-
Digital applications
Best suited for social media, web, and email with lower resolution needs.
-
Supporting graphics
Helpful for background textures or secondary visuals.
When to Think Twice
-
Logo design
Logos must be original, scalable, and built as vector artwork. AI-generated images are low resolution, raster-based, and not structured for complete brand systems.
-
Apparel and promotional products
Print production requires high-resolution, properly formatted files. AI imagery may not meet those standards.
-
Large-format print
Trade show displays and signage demand files built specifically for scale. AI images don’t always hold up.
-
Core brand visuals
Foundational brand elements should be strategic and uniquely developed — not quickly generated.
When guided by strategic thinking and effective prompts, AI can streamline workflow and enhance creative exploration. Without direction, however, it’s just output. Strong brands still require human insight and intentional design.
At Barnett, we help businesses determine where AI fits within a smart creative strategy, and where a custom solution is the better investment.
