How to Handle

Students Using AI

Many of our students will be exploring how to use AI this upcoming school year. As part of starting the year off strong, addressing the elephant in the room is recommended.

AI detectors are not reliable and can create a defensive relationship with your students. Some are exploring using AI and need more guidance on what is an is not permissible. Please try this Google Gemini Gem to hep facilitate the conversation.

How this works: Open the Gem and paste or attach the students work. Be sure to remove PII (names, ID numbers, or anything else that specifically identifies the student). Additionally describe the assignment and/or attach the assignment directions.

The "Maybe a student used AI Gem" will give you some tips at what may be AI generated and provide you with gentle talking points to address the students AI usage.
