WEBINAR: Hydraulics & Hydrology Overview and Benefits of Mimicking the Natural System
|
|
When proposing to alter the natural terrain for the benefit of a project, it is important to have a holistic understanding of the hydrologic and hydraulic system being altered to ensure there will be no increase in the risk of flooding for neighboring properties. The attendees will obtain a basic understanding of hydrology and hydraulics including how changing the land type and elevations affect both, and will be shown new data and tools that are available to engineers that help in designing no-impact projects. Finally, attendees will see an example of how the rerouting of a channel has impacted flood risk for neighboring properties and a holistic solution to the problem. Call 225-387-5579 or email inquiries@aiala.com for more information.

On August 20, AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker will discuss the July Architecture Billings Index (ABI) and what the rapidly changing economic conditions could mean for firms. Here’s the link to watch (registration required). AIA just launched a new interview series in which Kermit offers important context to timely economic issues. You can read the first article here. A new report from Brookings shows the economic focus is all about rebuilding better, specifically using a framework to support an equitable recovery from COVID-19. If you want to keep up with project behaviors and implications caused by COVID-19 in the DIY and contractor world, The Farnsworth Group has partnered with Home Improvement Research Institute to provide consistent updates, including if work has been delayed or stopped.

FROM OUR COLLEAGUES AT AIA CONNECTICUT: Unconscious Bias
|
|
Diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at work can take many forms. However, those efforts are often undermined by bias, which may be unconscious. For any employer working toward a fair and inclusive workplace, having certain individuals unfairly excluded or limited at work is problematic. In the modern U.S. workplace, unconscious, or implicit, bias can affect our decisions and requires strategic thinking to ensure that employees and management are aware of it and committed to eradicating its influence. This webinar will discuss strategies to mitigate unconscious bias at work and how to influence that strategy from the top down.
Panel includes:
Britt-Marie Cole-Johnson, a partner at Robinson + Cole who is a member of the firm's Labor, Employment, Benefits + Immigration Group, and a well-regarded lecturer on topics including sexual harassment and bias in the workplace. Prior to law school, Britt-Marie taught in the Atlanta Public School System as a Teach for America corps member. She interned with Judge M. Yvette Miller at the Georgia Court of Appeals and participated in Emory University School of Law's Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic.
John Rice, a partner at AKF Engineers the last 27 years who just launched a new firm, Legacy Engineers, dedicated to advancing more Blacks in the engineering field. He is also on the Board of the Urban Green Council (NYC's premier green advocacy group).
Gustavo Rodriguez, AIA, CODIA, LEED AP, Partner at FXCollaborative and a registered architect in New York and the Dominican Republic who is passionate about working collaboratively to craft innovative buildings. He is a vocal advocate for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives, and has spoken about design and diversity at venues including AIA Virginia's Architecture Exchange East conference and THE PLAN Perspective conference.
Natasha Espada, AIA, NOMA, LEED AP BD+C, founder and Principal of STUDIO ENÉE architects who has over 25 years of design and construction expertise in both renovation and new construction for institutional, civic, and commercial clients. Natasha is the President of the Boston Society of Architects (BSA)/AIA. She promotes Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and is working to make Boston a Design City by bringing design and art to all neighborhoods in Boston.
Our interactive panel will be moderated by Paolo Campos, AIA, NOMA, Associate Principal at Patriquin Architects. He is a founding member of NOMAct, establishing a state chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects. At AIA Connecticut, Paolo is Co-Chair of the BP&R Committee and serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors.
Don't miss this opportunity to hear from these distinguished guests and to gain perspective on how firms can promote an inclusive work environment and develop equitable opportunities for employees.
