Churchill Downs: Update on Growth & Expansion (1 AIA Credit)
Presented  by Pete Berdovich, Director of Construction, Churchill Downs

The Courier Journal reported on April 10, 2019 that Oak Grove Racing and Gaming is breaking ground as another investment by a partnership of Churchill Downs and Keeneland providing yet more options in horse racing and gaming in Kentucky.  The Courier Journal said that this venue is "an estimated cost of $150 million adjacent to Fort Campbell, [and] will be built in two phases. The first phase, which is expected to be completed in time for a 12-day October meet already approved by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC), will include a harness race track, stable facilities and a paddock. The second phase, which will feature a grandstand, an amphitheater, a 128-room hotel and gaming facilities for 1,500 historical racing machines, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2020."

This news is on the heals of growth and expansion we have seen recently in the Louisville area at the Churchill Downs Racetrack and Derby City Gaming.  Mr. Berdovich has agreed to take time out of his demanding schedule to talk to our group about their growth and expansion.  The AIA Central Kentucky Chapter is invited to join CSI Louisville in this in-depth first-hand look at what it takes to coordinate such design and construction effort at such fast pace.

The objectives of this course will be as follows:
1. Attendees to learn about the existing and upcoming projects and how and what decisions have been made that impact these investments.
2. Attendees will learn about the needs and challenges in the horse industry and how Churchill has been able to respond to these.
3. Attendees will gain knowledge on how legislation changes have affected the horse industry, and specifically Churchill Downs.
4. Attendees will learn about specific features that are must have in existing and new race track, stables, paddock, grandstand and gaming facilities.

Architects will be able to earn 1 AIA/CES LU be attending this event.

AIA/CKC Invited to A4LE Program:
Tour of St. Matthews Library by Steven Ward, AIA
Date:  Monday, May 20, 2019, 4:00pm
Location:  St. Matthews Branch LFPL

Course Description:
The City of St Matthews approached Louisville Free Public Library about expanding the scope of a planned renovation of the St Matthews Library branch. Instead of minor interventions in the existing branch, the City's goal was that the busiest branch in the LFPL system would have an increased presence in St Matthews and an enhanced capacity to serve the community. The resulting renovation and expansion tripled the branch's square footage but also triggered the reconsideration of the entire campus on which the library is sited. Steven Ward of Studio Kremer architects will present the design trajectory, share key design considerations, and host a tour of the newly opened facility.

Learning Objectives:
1  Understand the priorities of a library system needing to address a variety of programming needs and conflicting public expectations.
2  Understand how a limited-scope project to expand a library branch impacted planning for the full campus of St Matthews' City Hall.
3  Gain insight into how the goals of developing an expanded branch library, albeit a highly-trafficked one, can differ from those of the larger regional hubs.
4  Get an introduction to some design solutions and systems not used often in our local construction market.

Happy hour to follow afterwards at Molly Malone's in St. Matthews.
