As renewable energy becomes a key part of facility planning, architects are increasingly expected to understand the foundational elements of solar photovoltaics (PV) and how these systems interact with the built environment. This session offers a straightforward introduction to solar energy systems - what they are, how they work, and how they are commonly implemented on and around commercial buildings. Participants will explore real-world case studies and learn how solar components are selected, configured, and installed.
In this two-part series, nationally recognized commercial solar engineering, procurement, and construction firm, Melink Solar, provides the tools and strategies to symbiotically work with solar EPCs and successfully execute a solar system project in the built world.

A Joint Meeting of AIA Dayton and SAME Kittyhawk Post
Intelligence Community Directive/Intelligence Community Standard provides technical specifications for the construction and management of suggested wall assemblies to meet sound attenuation requirements. Sound attenuation is critical for maintaining security of sensitive information within an intelligence construction application. However, even with proper construction, additional design and construction considerations are necessary to ensure the facility meets all security and accreditation requirements related to sound attenuation. This case study focuses on a 255,000 SF, multi-story MILCON project at WPAFB.

The electrification transition is in full swing nationwide, especially in the Midwest. Design considerations to implement on-site renewable energy generation is a necessary skill set with growing energy demand stressing the grid and creating volatile energy markets. Deploying behind-the-meter solar systems to match a building’s needs and reduce Scope 2 carbon emissions is not simple or complicated – it’s right in between. Competencies required to assess when and how a solar photovoltaics (PV) system fits include understanding how solar will perform, the right mix of equipment, financial analysis, the funding incentives available, and the design/build process for new or existing buildings.
