Construction cost increases of 200% or more in the last 5 years has been a shock to the system. Client expectations and even our own gut understanding of the cost of building, or renovating, in today’s market are difficult to rectify with the reality of today’s bidding environment. Rethinking the traditional approach, we challenge the idea that the low bidder is always the best choice and propose a value-added methodology.
Part 1 of this program series will focus on understanding current market conditions and drivers, types of project budgets and the value of early design phase cost modeling.
This program is presented by AIA Cincinnati’s Academy. AIA Dayton is a member of the planning committee for the Academy, represented by Fernando Oseguero, AIA.
Learning Objectives
- Understand how current market conditions are impacting project budgets and what that means for early cost modeling.
- Understand a project budget versus a construction budget and what goes into each.
- Understanding simple rules of thumb for determining and evaluating preliminary budgets.
- Understand early cost modeling as a tool for aligning design decisions and client budget expectations and maintaining them throughout the design and specifications process.

Ohio Small Firm Exchange (SFx) 2024
The Ohio SFx (Small Firms Exchange) is in its second year. In the even months, we will keep the half hour open for people to get to know one another, ask questions, and be open for general conversation. In the odd months, we will have hour-long meetings focusing on a topic around a featured guest with experience or expertise. There will still be time for introductions at the beginning, and lots of time for follow-up questions and discussion.
If you have expertise in any of our upcoming topics and would like to participate, or know someone who would, please let me know.
Submitted by Ohio’s SFx State Representative, Sarah Kleiner, AIA, LEED AP, Envisage Architecture LLC.
