News Brief 1-5-24

President's Message

Hi Everyone! I am Rebecca Nikolai, please call me Becca.

It’s been great to serve on the AIA Dayton board the past 5 years, and I am excited to step into my new role as president for 2024. I am an architect who works at MODA4 design, located in downtown Dayton. I am passionate about historic preservation & adaptive reuse, and using new technology to engage with clients. I am also a mother and I live with my husband and 7 month old daughter in Kettering.

Our committees have been diligently planning for the new year and it is our goal to focus on membership & community engagement this year.

We are excited to kick off 2024 with our annual student design competition. This years competition prompt is to design an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). If you are interested in serving as a volunteer or sponsoring a scholarship, please let us know.

We are going to offer some virtual programming for learning units at the beginning of this year, and an AIA Dayton code academy is in the works. The code academy will be led by building officials and plans examiners to teach us about the 2024 changes to the Ohio Building Code.

We also are welcoming three new members to the Board of Directors to represent you. Lauren McCarroll, Assoc. AIA, Champlin Architects & Katie McCall, Assoc. AIA, McCall Sharp Architects are our Associate Directors this year who are teaming up on the student design competition & programming for young professionals. Cally Lange, AIA, Principal of Revival Design Studio is serving as our Secretary. Welcome to the board! We still have one board member position open, please let us know if you are interested!

I would like to extend a huge thank you to our committed sponsors and new sponsors for 2024 – you truly help keep things running for AIA Dayton.

We look forward to seeing you at our springtime event with SAME at TopGolf. Be on the lookout for information on that soon.

Thank you & Happy New Year!

-Becca

2024 Student Design Competition Announced

The Student Design Competition planning is well underway, and we are looking forward to another great year! For the 2024 competition, the students will be designing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU’s) in the Oregon District. The competition will kick-off on January 20th for a design charrette at the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch. If you are interested in volunteering for the charrette and/or being a design reviewer in the coming months, please reach out to the co-directors Lauren McCarroll ([email protected]) and Katie McCall ([email protected]). As students that once participated in the competition, it means so much for professionals to invest their time and expertise into a student’s project. We hope you will consider volunteering this year!

The Black Woman Architect Who Hopes to Change the Face of Design in America
