President's Message

As AIA members we are all in the business of creating new beginnings: new relationships, new projects, new initiatives, new opportunities, new architects, and new architecture. But we also understand the importance of precedent and learning from those who have gone before us. I am excited and grateful to serve as AIA Dayton president for 2020, a year that will be full of new beginnings, and I look forward to working with you as we continue our mission to be “the voice of the architectural profession and the resource for its members in service to society.”

AIA Dayton will host the AIA Ohio 2020 convention this September 24 – 26, and several committees have been working since last March to showcase Dayton and make this an outstanding gathering. We have several new beginnings slated for the convention, and we’ll share details over the coming months. Of course we will continue to serve you with monthly continuing education opportunities, regular social gatherings, and our annual high school Student Design Competition. We will not have Design Awards or Design Lecture this year due to the convention activities.

I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our Board of Directors and our Executive Director, Jane Treiber. I am proud to serve with them, and AIA Fellow Terry Welker’s words echo in my mind… “many hands make an easy lift.” Our Board exemplifies this creed, and our 2020 goals will come to fruition because of it. Finally, many thanks to Brian McAlexander, AIA who served us well as 2019 president; I am grateful for his leadership and will continue to rely on his insights and guidance.

Thank you for entrusting me with the leadership of AIA Dayton for 2020. I look forward to serving you. Please feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Respectfully,

Charlie Setterfield, AIA
President, AIA Dayton

Tour the Newly Renovated University of Dayton Arena

Date:   Wednesday, February 5
Time: 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Location: Meet at the Ticket Office
Cost:   Free for AIA Dayton members; $25 for non-AIA Dayton members

The University of Dayton unveiled its newly renovated UD Arena on November 19, fresh off a three-year, $76.2 million upgrade that is meant to give the facility another 50 years of life. The arena opened in 1969 and if it lasts another 50 years, UD Arena would turn 100 in 2069.

While UD Arena was built for basketball, it has served many other purposes over the years — Elvis performed there four times — and could play host to even more events in the years to come because of the improvements made over the last three years. The final phase of the renovations saw the expansion of the concourse on the arena’s west side, new locker rooms at court level, improved lighting over the court and a new media room. Those were just a few of the final improvements. One of the most significant enhancements made during this phase was the addition of a climate-control system. Air conditioning will give UD the chance to use the venue more in the summer.

Please visit our website for the program information.

Please email Rebecca Hughes if you would like to volunteer at one of our (3) Saturday workshops. The project kicks off on January 18th at the Dayton Metro library main branch with a design charrette.

The Conboys: A House Full of Faith and “Joy”

After meeting on a co-ed softball team, P.J. and Dianna Conboy later married when they were in their early 30s and started an engaging journey that neither envisioned. It’s a story with chapters that feature month upon month of negative pregnancy tests, fostering and then adopting an African-American brother and sister, the miracle of giving birth to two biological children, and a year-long odyssey that culminated with a family adventure to China to bring back their newest addition – a now 6-year-old girl they named Joy.

Facade Inspection Scrutinized Following Death in New York City

New York City officials are stepping up enforcement of Local Law 10, which regulates building facades, after debris falling from a Manhattan building killed a city-based project management firm executive on Dec. 17. Industry members are calling for beefed up enforcement of existing statutes in the city and elsewhere in the U.S.

Erica Tishman, 60, an architect and vice president of Manhattan-based Zubatkin Owner Representation LLC, died after being struck by debris that fell from a brick tower at 729 Seventh Ave., near W. 49th Street in Manhattan’s midtown section. The city Dept. of Buildings (DOB) announced Dec. 30 that it would ramp up inspections, more strongly enforce Local Law 10 and add 12 new inspectors.

Bjarke Ingels Architects and Toyota imagine a wild new smart city in Japan

Mere months ago, the Alphabet-backed Sidewalk Labs laid claim to developing the most “innovative district in the entire world,” with its big plans for turning Toronto’s waterfront into an urban laboratory. It’s far from the only technology company clamoring to imagine the future of the city, and based on new plans from Toyota and Bjarke Ingels Group, it’s perhaps no longer the most ambitious.
