2024 Student Design Competition Announced

The Student Design Competition planning is well underway, and we are looking forward to another great year! For the 2024 competition, the students will be designing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU’s) in the Oregon District. The competition will kick-off on January 20th for a design charrette at the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch. If you are interested in volunteering for the charrette and/or being a design reviewer in the coming months, please reach out to the co-directors Lauren McCarroll ([email protected]) and Katie McCall ([email protected]). As students that once participated in the competition, it means so much for professionals to invest their time and expertise into a student’s project. We hope you will consider volunteering this year!

How Japan Overhauled its Architecture for Earthquakes—And What the Latest Disaster Reveals About Their Approach

Japan were rocked by a sudden earthquake that measured 7.5 magnitude on the Noto peninsula in the western Ishikawa prefecture, which subsequently triggered the country’s first tsunami warning since 2011’s deadly Tōhoku event. The 2024 quake is reported to be the country’s most powerful in several decades, according to the US Geological Survey, and the harrowing search for victims of the fires and collapsed buildings that it caused is still underway—with the death toll (at the time of this article’s publication) being over 150.

Architects’ Latest Survey Shows Mixed Home And Neighborhood Wellness Trends

“The idea that more space makes us happier is slowly changing. Better crafted, more personalized space is growing,” points out Montclair, New Jersey-based architect Rachael Grochowski. Serving clientele in the New York metro area, she adds, “Families are investing in spaces and details that fit their needs for a long road versus the idea of moving once they outgrow the space. We have integrated more detailed storage systems, considered smaller bedrooms and allowed outdoor space to be a significant way to make a smaller home feel larger.”

Congress Loosens Fee Limitation for Design Services on Federal Projects

Long deemed a “major concern” for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the design and construction industries at large, the longstanding 6 percent fee limitation on design and construction contracts for federal projects completed under the purview of the Department of Defense has been increased by 10 percent as part of the Congressional National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2024. The bipartisan bill, which authorizes $886 billion in defense spending, was formally signed into law by President Joe Biden late last year after it passed the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

Why Employees Are Taking Ownership of Their Architecture Firms

The architecture firm BNIM has always been a leader on sustainable design. In the late 1980s, principal emeritus Bob Berkebile was one of the first architects to push the industry to take the idea of green buildings seriously. Then-President Bill Clinton even recruited him to lead a climate-minded restoration of the White House. Berkebile and his Kansas City, Missouri–based firm — he’s the “B” in BNIM, alongside Tom Nelson, David Immenschuh and Steve McDowell — received top honors from the American Institute of Architects in 2011, among many other accolades.

New York jump-starts the "building decarbonization" trend

New York City will soon begin penalizing owners of buildings that emit too much greenhouse gas — a move toward requiring net-zero building emissions by 2050.

The big picture: Four states and nine cities and counties have adopted such policies, known as "building performance standards" — which are likely to go national.

Why it matters: Residential and commercial buildings emit 13% of harmful carbon emissions, according to the EPA — far more in cities, where they are concentrated — and are a major contributor to climate change.
