Time: 4:00 - 5:30 PM
Location: Meet at the Ticket Office
Cost:   Free for AIA Dayton members; $25 for non-AIA Dayton members

The University of Dayton unveiled its newly renovated UD Arena on November 19, fresh off a three-year, $76.2 million upgrade that is meant to give the facility another 50 years of life. The arena opened in 1969 and if it lasts another 50 years, UD Arena would turn 100 in 2069.

While UD Arena was built for basketball, it has served many other purposes over the years — Elvis performed there four times — and could play host to even more events in the years to come because of the improvements made over the last three years. The final phase of the renovations saw the expansion of the concourse on the arena’s west side, new locker rooms at court level, improved lighting over the court and a new media room. Those were just a few of the final improvements. One of the most significant enhancements made during this phase was the addition of a climate-control system. Air conditioning will give UD the chance to use the venue more in the summer.

Don't tear down downtown

As a group of nonprofit organizations that are located in, invested in and committed to the future and vitality of downtown Springfield, we voice our concerns over the preliminary proposal from the Springfield-Sangamon Growth Alliance that could result in the demolition of four blocks of existing small businesses and nationally recognized historic buildings. Tearing down these places is not the best path toward creating a university presence in downtown Springfield.

The 11 Most Anticipated Buildings of 2020

Looking back at the year that was, 2019 had several difficult, if not defining, moments in the world of architecture. In May, the inimitable architect I.M. Pei died at the age of 102. Argentine starchitect César Pelli, a decade younger than Pei, passed away two months later. And then, of course, Notre-Dame Cathedral was within minutes of completely burning a millennium of history to the ground.

The hottest new thing in sustainable building is, uh, wood

Architects, builders, and sustainability advocates are all abuzz over a new building material they say could substantially reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the building sector, slash the waste, pollution, and costs associated with construction, and create a more physically, psychologically, and aesthetically healthy built environment.

Toyota’s creepy new ‘prototype town’ is a real-life Westworld

It’s the near future. A company has built a “prototype town” which will allow scientists and researchers to test an array of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, human mobility, robotics, materials science, sustainable energy, and autonomy in one controlled environment. Its employees (and the generally tech-curious) have been invited to move into this “living laboratory” as full-time test subjects, with an end-goal to determine the future of the auto industry, urban planning, and community. No, I’m not describing a plot of HBO’s series,  Westworld . The community is the brainchild of Toyota Motor Corporation: it’s called Woven City, and it’s scheduled to break ground near Mt. Fuji, Japan, in 2021.

The case for ... never demolishing another building

The wrecking ball has always been the great symbol of urban progress, going hand in hand with dynamite and dust clouds as the politicians’ favourite way of showing they are getting things done . But what if we stopping knocking things down? What if every existing building had to be preserved, adapted and reused, and new buildings could only use what materials were already available? Could we continue to make and remake our cities out of what is already there?
