Presidents Message

AIA President’s Welcome

Goodbye, 2022! Hello, 2023! I first want to thank Dan Wyckoff for serving AIA Dayton as President for 2022, bringing us back to a fairly “normal” year of events. I will be taking over his former role for 2023, so for those of you who don’t know me, hopefully we’ll meet this year at one of our many events! I am a Daytonian who left for college then returned home ten years later. I became a registered architect in 2015 when working at Annette Miller Architects and have served in various capacities on the AIA Dayton board over the last ten years. I recently started a new role as Assistant Professor at Sinclair Community College, and I am the founder of a non-profit that offers architecture and design workshops to K-12 students with the aim of diversifying the profession (Hatch Architects Design Center). I have worked with many of you in these various roles and look forward to continuing those relationships and expanding our reach at AIA Dayton. I am particularly passionate about K-12 outreach in underserved communities, so that will be a personal priority of mine for the year. Look for opportunities to volunteer your time and knowledge to kids who may have never heard the work “architect”—yet! AIA Dayton will continue to offer many events and activities in 2023, including our design awards, so we hope to see you there! If you have something in mind you’d like to recommend, please let us know. We’re always looking for new ideas!

Sincerely,

Alex Bohler

The 2023 project is to design a Funk Museum of Music!

High school students will design a museum and music space inspired by Dayton's Funk Music history in the 70s and 80s. They will learn what a museum for music will require by creating a new space that could house the Dayton Funk Center which has been in need of a permanent home. Student will meet directly with the funk center director David Webb as well as designers who have made an impact on designing for music.
