AIA Dayton Mini-Golf Outing Scores with Attendees

Yes, it was a little cold for October 1 and yes, there was a period of rain that blew through Young’s Dairy in the middle of the evening, but this is 2020 and we have all come to expect the unexpected!

That said, 55 attendees – AIA Dayton members, their families and friends, and industry partners – attended the first mini-golf family outing that was fun, family friendly and a welcome event in the outdoors in an otherwise year of Zoom conferences and meetings.

Many thanks to our sponsors – Event Sponsor Snyder Brick & Block; Dinner and Beverage Sponsor Elements IV Interiors; Hole-in-One Sponsor ElitAire; Corn Maze Sponsor Marsh Building Products; Batting Cage Sponsor Shell & Meyer; and Ice Cream Sponsor Koroseal. Also thanks to Hole Sponsors Brackett Builders, Chapel Electric, DMI Metals, L2Engineering, M-Engineering, Prater Engineering, Tri-Tech Engineering, and The Underground Detective.

Architect-Advocate Pascale Sablan Is Revising The History Of The Built Environment

“There is a difference between activism and advocacy. Activism is posters, marches, protests, getting everybody aware and informed, mobilizing, cultivating resources to draw attention on a particular issue,” says Pascale Sablan. “Advocacy, to me, is more long-term, the nitty-gritty of policy writing, getting information and statistics embedded so that regardless of the person in charge, this rule has to be followed. Although I do play both roles, I think I lend myself more as an advocacy leader and I have been strategic about selecting board positions that allow me to create policy changes.”

Why one architecture firm is looking at planes to construct buildings of the future

The way buildings are designed is backward, and a team of architects, car designers, and aerospace engineers wants to turn it around.

“In a traditional design process, whether it’s modular, prefabricated, or traditional construction, an architect designs something and then everyone has to figure out how they’re going to make it,” says architect Chris Sharples. This makes projects expensive, time-consuming, and sometimes nearly impossible to actually get built. The process, he says, should be switched around so that how it will be built determines how it gets designed. “That’s how you build an airplane. That’s how you build a car. You don’t figure it out after you’ve designed it. The design process takes its lead from the manufacturing process.”

Small Project Awards celebrates builds that punch above their weight

As was the case with the recent AIA Housing Awards, the AIA 2020 Small Project Awards is a relatively light year, comprising just seven projects (down from a dozen last year).
